Managed to spend a few hours this weekend on the car.

Took off the underseal on the drivers side rear tub to find so rot on the spring cone
Image
Patched that up
Image

Then managed to get the inner wheel arch welded in
Image

Then got the outer arch on to, I just couldn't help myself but put a wheel on
Image
Image

Fully seam welded on
Image

Moved onto the passanger side, the spring cone not looking so good here, needs new panel and some patching
Image

Also started prep for the arch's

Happy easter!

Managed to get some more ime on the car this weekend.

Choose to work on the passanger rear arch.
Found a rather large 'bee hive' of filler clumped on the rear corner so ended up pulling all that out
Image
Image

Worked my way around the corner to then find this on the inner skin
Image
That's since been cut out and treated, but not had chance to put new metal in yet

I then went about making a repair panel for the filler section, not a perfect panel but i'd happy i made it.
Image

Got the inner arch welded in place
Image

Finally got the outer arch and the repair panel welded in.
Image

Plenty of grinding back to be done but it looks solid.

The next big job is the door plates in the front arch, that may take soem more thinking about!

Spent a few hours on the car in last couple of days, Hope to get a good amount of hours on the car this week too as got a week or so off, until i start my new job.

No pics but have striped out the N/S Rear suspension cone and cut out all the rot, just need to make a patch to mount back in and then the new cone made by Si Creasey can go in, Cheers Si.

I've mainly been working on the front drivers arch/ door catch plate.
A quick reminder of what it looked like
Image

I tried an impact screwdriver to get the door bolts out, Not a chance! so i thought, sod it and attacked the nuts with an angle grinder, that worked :)
Image
Image

This shows what needs cutting out
Image
Note the lines show the location of the holes for the door hinge, *critical*

This is all that was left of the hinge, note, the rest of it i didn't cut off, it had dissolved!
Image

Made a template of what i need to weld in, but going to use some thicker metal
Image

On another note, found some more revited metal, What's one more repair after what i've done hey?

In my experience, there are very few Imps that have been repaired properly in the A post area... even on "professionally" restored cars. So good on ya for doing it properly, Noel.

I don't know if it would help, I've just had a pair of lower section A pillers become surplus to requirement. They may do for repairing rotten ones. Could get some photos if interested.

Appriciate the offer there, but think a simple patch will sort this out. Thanks again though.

I'm after some advice.
I really don't like the fact that the door bolts have screw heads. I'm looking at maybe using countersunk allen key head bolts instead. Can you guys give any reasons why this shouldn't be done?

as don says,

no reason at all why you can't use allen headed csk bolts, i have them on my motor. you could even get stainless if you fancied. cromwell tools will get them in next-day for you, you can buy them individually at 1/100 of the box price usually.

Hi Noel,
It's the first time that I've looked at your post and it's great to see your progress. It's frightening to see how much filler and fibreglass can be hidden on a car which looks reasonably solid as it has implications on the car's strength. Hilda had around 4 inches of fibreglass which made up the inner rear wheelarches and the bodged outer ones were filled with 1 cm of filler in places. I've kept one of the old arches as a souvenir of how bad she was! Our car also looked tidy if you didn't look too closely.
Keep up the good work.

Cheers Don and Brian for the bolting question, i'll get some ordered! May well even treat her to some stainless ones!

Lesley, appreciate your time at looking at the thread and for replying. I am still shocked by how much work i have ended up putting into the car, i think i've broken the back of it now, but there is still a lot of work to do.

I have been working on it today, finished off the odd bit of welding that needed doing, i have cut out and replaced the metal in the A-pillar, now need to get door plate so i can build up the inner arch and get the door re attached. Rear suspension cone is coming along, might get that done tomorrow.

Sorry for the lack of pictures recently guys, i will post some when i get chance.

As for what i have been doing, the A pillar is now one piece of metal again, nice and solid, ready for me to fab the inner arch tub and around the door plate.
I have also finished patching the rear arch tub, where the suspension cones fitted, that looks good now, i have also got the new rear cone in too.

The car is off it's roller and back on axle stands ready to be moved in a few weeks.
Hope everyone had a great time at imp50, was great seeing the pictures etc.

Update with photo's soon!

Well, i've had a few people asking for an update and some pictures, so here goes.

Cleaned up the A piller, i say cleared up, i mean cut it out!
Image

Taking plenty of measurments, i then made a patch to fit back into the pillar
Image

I patched the rear arch tub so i had somewhere for the suspension cone to fit to
Image

I also patched up the inner corner on the N/S
Image

I have the outer rear corner cut and ready to be tacked and welded in, just need the time.

Oh and Luke, i'm moving the imp as i am moving into a house with a garage, much better and cheaper. means i can spend money on the car rather than on just storing the car!

Well afarid there is not much to report here. I havent been up to the car for a good few weeks now and it's sad to say but it will be that way for a while now. The car will be moved to a dry secure barn where it will sit, with no work being carried out on it. Finances have got the better of me.
There's a few jobs i'd like to get done before it moves and i will report on those but i'm afraid this thread will be quiet for a while (6-12months) until i have my own space and raised a bit of money.
Cheers for all your support through this, definatly pushed me along and i'm sure you'll do the same when i get back to it.

I'M BACK!!!!

So Vickie got moved back up to West Yorkshire yesterday, to a nice big space where i can do plenty of work on it.

Straight away i have been working on it, certainly got my mojo for her back!

This is the car being off loaded from the trailer in her new home
Image

I'm sharing the space with a friend but we have plenty of space!
Image

I got straight down to it, the most worrying part of the project for me now, is the front end. with it being slightly twisted from a previous accident, however i wasn't expecting to see this
Image

Image
Huge chunks of filler came out, it looks scary but i actually dont think this is so bad, straightening the front panel will be worse.

Anyway, updates will now be frequent, so lets see how it goes!
