Post by violet_vivid »

Heya all!

Just not long got home from going to, viewing, buying & driving home my latest toy, a 1968 Hillman Super Imp
My Xmas present to myself ;)

:D

pictures from her advert on Retro Rides:

Image

taken at a coffee stop at Strensham services:
Image

Abit of a play on the M69 ;)
Image

& less than a mile from my parents:
Image

146 faultless miles later she's currently sat on the road outside my parents house :D
However the heater doesn't work lol

Also a great thanks to my brother for the lift, while he is really quite unwell *HUGS!* :)

Now a list of planned things:

Imp Club membership (as soon as paid!) :D
Fix heater & the non-working brakelight
full service

Mods (in no real order):

New Competition Rotoflex couplings
High Efficiency Radiator and new water pump (possibly Electric)
Alternator Conversion
wire in stereo & cigarette lighter
minilite-style wheels
change front seats for more supportive ones (suggestions)
Monte Carlo springs
Janspeen manifold & bike can exhaust
4 front spotlights & one rear one
Clear lights conversion
Rev counter
Front Disc Brakes conversion

But most of all Enjoy! as a Imp is been the last-but-one car of the main list of 'ones i've wanted since childhood :D

Sooo yeah, a VERY happy girl here!

:D

You can fit 7x13 on the rear with no probs Vee but stick to 6 inch on the fronts or you may find the 7's will rub and "tramline with wide tyres on although duk has 7's on the front and His is fine.........
You need bigger arches like this Vee.....
Image :D
This is My imp on 6x13 superlites with spacers and longer wheel studs to make the rear wheels fill the arches properly

Heya!

Small bit of an update. Have properly tightened the hubnut, and keeping a close eye on it :-)

went heathrow area last night, but used my dads company car. So now have my wheels, but not yet fitted them as i require nuts. Any advice where to get them?

BUT

came home from work on a 1/2 day to find somethings had been delivered...

Image

:D :D

Now i have them & they are fitted I'll posy teh link to the ebay seller

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll? ... K:MEWNX:IT

they aren't brilliant, and the holes needed abit of gentle widening to fit, but I'm pleased

:D

Yeah.....my first Imp.....after a 15 year search for a late model RHD one in the States.....happened to be lilac metallic :o

Image

And how it arrived to me......after the idiots rolled it off the transport 20 miles from my house after completing 1000 miles:

Image

And when I was done plundering it:

Image

Image

Image

And it lives on in RVG769J that I imported shortly thereafter and restored (engine, rear engine lid, suspension, and a few other bits that I can't remember now):

Image

Couldn't resist posting on that subject:

Baz,

Yes, it was Murray's car! He had it in Georgia....which was the only late model RHD Super Imp I had ever seen in the States (actually the only Imp period). But it was exactly the spec I was looking for to replicate my mum's old Imp. The rest is history. I was fortunate enough to meet Murray last fall when he and Alan Peterson came to visit for an hour or so to get a head gasket and other parts from me to finish Winston McCorkle's Imp!!

Pic of Murray and I in front of my blue Imp holding the purple Imp's plates!

You know that feeling when you receive a part for your imp in the post, and you're sat inside holding it, turning it over & over in your hands trying to visualise how it fits, and completely failing to do so?

Then you actually take it out to the vehicle, and suddenly its like the clouds part & a single sunbeam shines on you, when you realise Exactly how it fits! :D

Yeah i just had one of these, with this part:
Image

Purchased from Mr Richard Sozanski from his ad in the May Impressions, and he very kindly has given me a spare engine cover in good condition. Soo if anybody requires one let me know

Finally got teh wire, and the connections, a decent-ish soldering iron, and am trying to wire the alternator up.

Now can i check, which connection on the starter solenoid i need to connect teh 50A wire to?

This is my solenoid:
Image

the spade connection on the left bottom shares a terminal with the battery lead, and the ring connection at the top goes to the starter motor.

Please help

Coming up :-)

Firstly a pic of the manifold after had been fitted, and had the silenceer put on to see (was too long, was sitting under the rear crossmember, against it)
Image
(note teh sparkplug acting as bung)

before fitting i'd wire brushed the manifold, and given it a coat of exhaust paint in silver (WEIRDEST paint i've ever used!!)
fitting went on fine, took teh chance to change my air filter housing, and fit a new airfilter. After taking the old housing off i decided i'd see what state teh filter was in. There wasn't one!

Well today the link pipe & mandrel bend i'd ordered tuesday turned up, soo fitted them :-)

pic of teh link pipe:
Image

And a final pic of teh finished silencer:
(still up on the jact at this point, hence the odd angle)
Image

set her all down, and started her up, sounds lovely :-)

decided to wait abit before going for a drive, as needed to do some things first.

When i finally went ofr a drive she sounded amazing, Alot smoother too :-D

However returning home suddenly the exhaust started blowing :-(

When i got back & carefully investigated i discovered that the sparkplug bung had fallen out

This was too late in teh day to get a replacement, or even a proper bung!

Soo thats tomorrow's quick fix, before saturday's London trip hehehe :D

Well after the first run down to London can say am Extremely pleased with teh exhaust!! soo much quieter! not really droney, except at 50 through roadworks, meh.

But have a slight problem as its blackening the rear wing corner, soo going to get either a solid pip to extend it across the back, soo the end is flush witht eh side of the car, ot use a flexy pipe to make the extention, and hardbolt the silencer to the crossmember :-)

Anyway here's a pic of teh bracket thats not shown in the previous ones, the one off the original silencer mounting point:

Image
the length of angle iron is what i was using on the sports system, after i snapped the flat steel one ;)

Well as of thursday evening I haves Odie back, all legal & M.O.T'ed :D

not going to say how much, but was worth it (22hours labour was involved!)

She now sits & rides ALOT better on full montes :D

and handling is even better!! :D

Have a suitable picture, showing new stance:

Image

Other things done include new rear hatch seal & repaired hinges, replace front suspension arms. Dick at Higham was telling me it took 8 tons on a press to free one kingpin bush, and then the other side maxed out their 10-ton press. soo he used an impact driver on it for about 15mins then it took 9 1/2 tons to move!!

Also replaced the rear shocks with ones from Malcolm Anderson, which add tot eh improvement of handling :D

and a new front wheel bearing as the old one was sticking.

*Happy*

Ahh fair enough. Soo can keep her on the good stuff!

Just out of curiosity I sent Jeff a text asking how things are going, and in his reply he included the suggestion to spray Odie matt black all over, with a purple insert in the side trim.

Now I remember this californian being around on Retro Rides (was originally the same colour as Odie):
Image

And while I like it I'm not convinced.

However this did get me thinking ;)

What about instead of matt black, matt cadbury purple (or a couple of shades lighter :) ) with a matt black bonnet? ;)

Whatever happens will have the black bonnet :) As in this pic:

Image

Just wondering is anybody who is proficient with the photoshop please take this image

Image

& matt cadbury purple (but abit lighter) her with a black bonnet?

Revealed, the package I had delivered the other day:

Image

Only held on with tape there, as not convinced. Am thinking maybe smaller ones, and one for the bonnet?

Also you might notice the lack of alloys, thats because the 16 alloy wheelnuts i have have Vanished somewhere!!

And also something strange has started happening, the steering wheel when in a straight ahead position will lift up about an inch (this is the whole column behind it too as well)
But this goes when any lock is applied :?:

The keen-eyed amongst you might spot the two modifications done since the last pic, one I did myself & the other courtesy of the wonderful Mr Morgan, who know what both are!! & has VERY kindly given me a couple of steering racks to try to sort the duff one out :D (ringing Higham Auo's in the morning)

Also where's the best place to get a fiesta track-rod end conversion from?

And does anybody know where I can get a stick-on numberplate from for the front?

Heya all!

Just thought would say am Image dead! Nor have I forgotten about us!

Infact have been Really busy putting miles on my Odie. Alot of miles infact! Think its around 2000 miles the past month 1/2

In that time I've had the running issues cured thanks to a Acuspark dizzy from Tim

And when had that fitted they fully set up the carb, though a touch rich as the solex is a bit worn.

Which will be replaced with a single SU in the near future

However today had a quiet day, soo fitted the headlights I've treated her to:

A set of halogens with Angel Eye rings :D

just on sidelights:
Image

& this one is one is with Ary, my Land Rover, who also has angel eyes but with the extra sidelights (hence the yellow look to her lights)

The 'badge' is a magnet from the b-movie my friend made (which was shown a the International Bram Stoker Film Festival in Whitby last year) which he used a pic of me in one of the scenes, soo gave me the magnet & a tee-shirt (can provide a pic of me 'modelling' that  )

This was what greeted me this morning!

Fortunately she's not needed today, as have a van from work :)

But yes, happy to have her back :D

Turned out was the linkage, after modifying it to be more adjustable the clutch is very nice to use :D

Well, having made it to Manchester in Odie, from Leicester, which involved battling TORRENTIAL rain/sleet over the Peak District due to the M62 being closed (By torrential I mean my wipers couldn't cope)
VERY well impressed with my little Imp, considering her carb isn't very well soo she's not running too brilliantly.

*Happy Vee*

Did do a little fettling at my friends when stopped to drop off some Land Rover parts for him, which involved moving the steering wheel round 90 degree's to allow me to see the speedo

Have a photo of me & Odie in his garage

Heya all!

Not updated this for awhile, soo first of all some pics, from the Retro Rides Fry Up Club East Midlands meet a couple of weeks ago :)

on the way:
Image

Genuinely taken hands-free! (proof to come)

at the Limes cafe:

The Hands Free:
Image

some detail pics a friend took (actually he took all these bar the milometer one
Image

Image
(had the engine running as otherwise was dripping fuel out the carb overflow  )

Also there's no pics of this, but about 30mins ago finished installing a 12v aux socket into Odie.

Now I'm not entirely proud of how the installation has been done, basically wired direct to the battery, via a inline 15amp fuse & a switch, then earthed back to the battery. Not ideal, but it does work, which is the main thing as its to power one of these

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/280756503647? ... 1497.l2649 as its bl***y cold!

Also I'm sort-of proud that I did it, outside on my drive in -2 degrees!

Thanks to Ash (Duk) for his suggestion as to how to get the wire from the battery into the car :D

Heya

Know I've not updated this in a while *blush*

Had Odie on the road for a while, but then the clutch went again. Turns out we'd not fitted the release bearing retaining clips
Soo she went to Higham Autos, ended up another new clutch.

Took her up to Manchester friday, then to Chester & back on saturday, no problem.

However I seem to be having yet more clutch troubles :(

coming back from Manchester sunday evening the clutch only worked if I kept some pressure on the pedal, if I didn't then the first couple of presses there was nothing :/
But then it'd pump up & be fine (if alittle weak feeling)

This was before I changed the modified rod for teh one Tim very kindly gave me.

Changed the rod over yesterday at work, drove home & it was the same, as was the same today coming to work :/

There was a little fluid rounf the bottom of the master cylinder when I changed the rod, so my guess is defunct seals.

looking on ebay there's a couple of 0.625 bore remote reservoir cylinders, do folks have any experience with either of these:

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Wilwood-Brake ... 0401344%26

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Girling-Maste ... 0401344%26

Her in snowy Chester:

Well thanks MASSIVELY to the help of Tim Morgan Odie is now back together, and running :D

This was when we stopped for lunch:

Image

However still have a clutch hydraulic issue, traced to the flexi being borked. Going to give Uncle Malc a call tomorrow see how quickly he can get one to me :)
(Also need to see about getting a new gearbox mounting bolt)

& all put together, been running (though a jubilee clip on the bottom hose is borked aswell) & the battery is on charge

Image

tired, achey, but happy, and have broke my fear of working on Imp engines :D
