GLA ddis.......

It's been a strange affair with GLAddis in the month or so I have known her -
I mean, I wasn't looking for another woman in my life,
And then suddenly she turned up,
Out of the blue,

A friend of mine rang me and asked if i could pick her up,
Turned out she was in a love triangle and disturbing the relationship between a GT6 and a double garage,
So being a good mate to the garage, I took her off his hands.

I was told at 47 years of age, she was ready for the scrap heap,
He told me She has a little trouble with her heart, saying she is a little warped in the head, and the body work needed a little surgery, but that essentially, she was no trouble to sort out, would be low maintenance once the ground work was done,
And came with no baggage like a woman of that age normally has,
you know the usual ---
- An ECU system that one day promised the world and the next was attached to a newer motor with bigger brasher enlarged cylinders.
- There weren't any multiple little injectors lurking around who's only purposes are to take up your time, pressure your cash and then blow it all out in one big blast into a million molecules! and tell you 'Your only a carburettor, you will never be my REAL Injector pump!'
- No fancy skeleton electrical systems in the closet waiting for a special occasion to come out and bear all the history, with embarasing pictures of what she got up to years ago, while trying out 'something new'!!!
and so on.

So porporting to be able to give me an easy trouble free life I gave her a chance.

And the next thing I knew she was hitching a lift on my truck!
DSC02785a.JPG
DSC02786a.JPG
DSC02787a.JPG
DSC02788a.JPG
Started off as any new relationship does, you think about.....
-Wineing and dining her (put her on the ramp, show her a new shiny set of spanners, ply her with fluids and see if anything free's up)
-Think about buying her a new dress to accentuate the good -(shiny wheels and big wheel arches)
-Offering her a little stability (uprated shocks and springs, and changing a little of the suspension geometry)
-Getting her a pampering weekend at a facial and massage spa (loosen up all the ceased bits and replace lots of perishables with modern stuff)
-Getting her nails and skin done at the beauty parlour (in the paint shop for a full 'spray tan' in the latest colour)
-Exploring your limits!!! and knowing when to stop (replacing the drum brakes with discs)

And then as a little time passes.
You realise that she is what she is,
An original,
And what made you like her, is what she is!

Now if she were a bit of a rouge, you might want to change her,
But she's not she's a mild mannered old lady

So GLAddis was saved from the scrap heap (applies to both humans and cars!) and a love hate relationship began!

Since i have known her there have been three blood injuries, and yesterday she hospitalised me!!!!
Giving me time to write this!!!
and more on the story to come!!! :o :o

Old Gladdis there doesn't look to bad for her age. :)

Good luck with it & keep us all posted .

yeah having a good poke around the old girl she definately needs o/s rear arch - possibly lower wing section, to make an easy weld, the rear o/s corner and the battery housing, and that's it. --at this stage :D ---hoping later its not  ---

Lifted the carpets and the floor is solid, cills are all good with a nice ring to them when you wrap your knuckles on them, rather that the famous 'filler thud'.
Got her up on the ramp and she has surface rust underneath but that's all, no rot, so (doesn't everyone say this) should be straight forward, as time allows.

So first thoughts turned to the engine.
DSC02789a.JPG
and as you might be able to see from the picture No2 spark plug is at a funny angle!!!
There's no water in her and the water pump is ceased solid.
So head gasket at least for starters and a look at the plug in No.2
DSC02790a.JPG
turned out it was the ceramic that had snapped but as you can see they have been in there for years, so i applied loads of wd and resisted the temptation to get the long bar on them for a few days- more on that one later!!!!

So as Henry the 8th said ----- Off with her head!!!!
wanted to have a good look at all the internals and how it all fitted together as i hadn't seen under an Imp 'boot/bonnet/engine cover' before, so - engine out after lots of reference pictures (finally found a use for a camera on a phone!!!)
DSC02791a.JPG
DSC02792a.JPG
and then the removal began.............

So GLAddis!!!

Well I got her into the yard,
You know us blokes like to show off where we work to our new women!!! (and our women to our work collegues too)
and a couple of the guys were eying her up as she rolled in, :) . The young ones passing comment that for an old girl, she wasn't too bad - but she wasn't their type, they prefer the younger brasher models!!

The older guys were a little more lustful of her, I saw them taking crafty glances under her skirt and down the top of her dress, checking out her body work.

I took her to the quiet 'long term ramp' at the back to give her a little privacy as I checked her over, and straight away decided she needed her heart lovingly looked at,

I coated her in wd to all the parts that would need loosening, and left her a couple of days while i spoke to her friends and people who knew her to do a little background checking on her

turns out she had no passport( VIN plate) so i wasn't sure what or who she really is/was- on digging about over those few days i found that she had been raped of her original name (reg number) by slightly latharious means!!!!
DSC02969a.JPG
After a little further investigation i found out i could discover her true identity from the number on her heart, so i paid her a visit and started searching around.

Its amazing how a woman can distract you from your original plan and that number two spark plug was just getting the better of my curiosity, I had to get my hands on it!!!!!! (ohh errrr missus)

After a little coaxing, and, I'd noticed previously that number 1 spark plug was already half way out,
I tried the old spark plug spanner trick on her, it worked a treat and her eyes lit up
She let me get it in the right place, but true to the morals of a girl this age she wasn't letting anything up easily. A little twist of the spanner and there she was - half the plug in the spanner and the remainder still in the head- flush with the spark plug hole!!!!
(tease  )
DSC02794a.JPG

So gone was all the thoughts that a little tender loving care would sort out her heart and head problems! - I'm no doctor, but, surgery is whats needed here, to sort out all those typical heart and head problems!!

So I decided (for her) that one way or the other she needed the surgery, I took the doctors 'before' pictures to reference what her original condition was and so at the end of it all i could see the improvement, and that after the op i could get all her bits back in the right place to make her purr and look pretty again!

Interior
I recon the guy had some spare gold hammerite in his shed,
And some old curtains from the local Indian take away he cut up!!!
And a bit of spare hall carpet!!!
Surely that heater box cover isn't original!!!

The interior is temporarily a parts storage area!!!

Then the (week long) process of this

Cut all the parts out
IMAG0426b.jpg
Cut the vinyl out and glue at the top edge (using whatever you have to hand to weigh it down while the glue dries)
IMAG0427a.jpg
Then add a little wadding to give it some 'life'
IMAG0430a.jpg
and leave that for the glue to dry

Didn't take too many pictures of the next bit as my hands were full
but you need to stretch it, glue and staple it in place, feather the corners on the back,
and you end up with panels like this -
IMAG0436a.jpg
Just the handle holes to cut and secure in the passenger side

impmann wrote:The lower dashboard fitted to your car (the bit with the glove box door etc) isn't original - but *may* be a rare Rokee accessory from the period. I haven't seen one in black vinyl before but it looks similar (along with the padded roll bar cover to the right of the binnacle and the door caps). We have one in Walnut that will one day end up in our 64 Imp...
I was wondering about that because when you open the glove box door theres no 'bottom' to the glovebox, you can just see
DSC03074a.JPG
was going to ask if anyone had any pictures of what should be in there.

There's no bottom, or box, or anything so if you threw something in there it would just hit the passengers feet!!

RELATIONSHIP UPDATE:::
Met up with GLAddis last night to talk a few things over!!
She's sorry for the injury she caused me and the time we have been apart, but it was quite late on at night so instead of dwelling on it, i pulled her seats out!!!
Not too gentlemanly I know, but when actions speak louder than words, that's what needs doing!
under all her seats and carpets she still appears sound, I'm still preparing myself for a shock when i get her naked and see what needs seeing to
theres a little surface rust on the shelf under the back window but that's all that's new.
So her seats are in my dinning room and need stripping down, one of the frames has snapped so needs completely stripping so i can weld it, then paint it and seen as I'[m doing that one- the other will need doing too,
Cant wait to be fully back on my feed so i can get back the the basics (Engine and body) rather than doing things the wrong way around and doing finishing bits first!
Anyway- clean 'er' pictures of bits i have cleaned as i stripped them
I like to get rid of most of the crud before attacking, As I hate doing so much washing of clothes, so as i take them off i give them a 'first clean'
and when i did i found all sorts of stampings on the engine,
DSC02822a.JPG
DSC02824a.JPG
and on the bottom of the sump
DSC02966aa.JPG
the gearbox was in the same state as the engine but after first clean didn't look too bad, the advantage of all the crud is the aluminium under it is nice and shiny

RELATIONSHIP UPDATE::::::
GLAddis is playing it cool, we haven't seen much of each other, but like in any relationship when you do get those times together you like to take pictures to preserve the memory, either to pine over when your apart or, or look back with fondness in later life - so today she bared some 'flesh' for me,
and like any potential partner, you have to take a few snaps just incase she's not so forward again, ahhh young love eh!!!

The upside was her ex brought some of her belongings round and dropped them off , nearly new Radiator, air box, a water pump, luggage compartment covers, spare wheel, Exhaust silencer, etc, but i think he get her a little mixed up with one of the other ex's too, theres a Min* timing cover and a really strange manifold and carb that i dont recognise!!!!

She doeslook good I know,
But i have saved the 'bad' bits till now - now I know it's not very gentlemanly of me to show a ladies bad bits , but , well,.......

NOW I know looking at the rest of the projects on here, and what they have needed - my 'bad' would be sooooo easy in comparison :)

Surface rust, not rot,

lots of surface rust, but not flexing, or rotten

GLAddis Isn't Happy,
She thinks I'm neglecting her!
but like every bloke, behind the scenes unknown to her I'm working on bits for her like a bu**er,
But you know- cos I haven't directly laid my hands on her body she doesn't get it, says I'm not being attentive!
says I'm not spending time with her---little does she know while i haven't been there I've been at home sorting out her seats!!

decided these dirty, ripped and seemingly unreplaceble seat covers needed something to replace them
DSC03180a old covers.JPG
So
Got out this
DSC03186a sewing machine.JPG
cut out loads of these

and these

Re: GLAddis! (408 GLA-before someone raped her) now OKU 389A

Post by sammy the sturgeon »

I am wanting to make up with Gladdis (again) I'm in the dog house!!!

Turns out that while I had been taking some sneaky time away from her she had spotted me,
With Laura!!!
Laura needed help - what was I supposed to do
A damsel in distress!!!!
She was cold and damp one night,
and I had the solution to warm her up!!
Took me about 13 hours to 'do' Laura properly,
but in the end I had her nice and dry and warm

(Just so no one thinks me a Tart - Laura Land Rover needed a new heater matrix)

Any way.....
Been thinking for quite a while about the upholstery for the front seats.
because this was what I had to work with
DSC03281a.JPG
Odd shaped and ripped apart underneath by the straps
DSC03278a.JPG
Well Colin sent me some seat bases (thank you very much Colin)

But I priced up all the straps and it was going to cost about £35.00 for the strapping
So - me being me I wondered if there was any straps in modern seats,
So I ripped apart the front seats of a crashed Mk 1 Punto, looking for what supported the base
but half way through I was looking at them and realised that the foam bases looked similar size (ish)
DSC03271a.JPG
and that the foam sat on a metal base

GLAddis! (408 GLA-now OKU 389A) - upholstry

Post by sammy the sturgeon »

Well after taking a bit of time thinking about it, I decided to have a play,
after all, if it didn't work I could throw away the punto bases and revert back to straps and foam.
so i cut the metal base and tried to see if it would fit....

got the welder out.......

and ended up with this
DSC03282a.JPG
DSC03273a.JPG
Trial fitted the foam and it just needs the back corners rounding a little so the upholstery cover fits snug without bumps.
DSC03276a.JPG
had a play with the springs out of the back of the punto seat too
DSC03274a.JPG
so just need to adjust and finish the covers off and see what it looks like

I'm continually having the 'original versus practical/safe debate with my self,
i.e. 100% original or minor mods to make it more safe and practical
- seat belts 'v' no seat belts
-electric fan 'v' original fan
and a whole host of other stuff,
and so far my theory is as original as practically possible, but minor disguised things are ok.

This afternoon I have been on call so seen as I brought some bits home to play with in between call outs I did this----
Took the RAC badge off the bumper and carefully took it apart.
DSC02786rac.JPG
Picked what little bit of paint was still in it out, and with all the old Humbrol enamels I have from building models as a kid I did some reverse painting!!!!
DSC03294a.JPG
DSC03295a.JPG
hope the colour gets better as t dries!!!

GLAddis has calmed a little - I went on thE 'BAY' and bought her some shiny bits to keep her happy, and in the car world equivalent - I have started painting her nails!!!!! (shiny bits that go under the boot!!!!!!! )

The past two days have been very cold and and wet and what better way to spend the time between call outs, than in front of the heater in 'Uncle John's' paint shop!!!!
so out came the grinder with a wire brush in it.
I got about 11/12 of the way through cleaning up the filter box, oil canister and metal part of the water pump mount before the grinder exhaled a puff of smoke, gave off 'Au de burnt electrics' and went into the retirement phase, of only spinning at a quarter speed. thats going back to be replaced today as its only a month or two old!

Anyway after cleaning the rest by hand!!!!! i got all the paint and surface rust removed from them, degreased and gave them to 'Uncle John' - you may be seeing a lot of him in the my pictures, 40 years paint experience means he's better than me at it and we have this deal i do bits for him he does some painting for me!!!
Tuesday I fitted reversing sensors to his wife's car (even in the paint world, prevention is better than the cure :D )
his experiences are vast and varied and his pride and joy is this,
his Original(but nut and bolt restored) 1964 Mini cooper s
P8110695.JPG
and in exchange for the reverse sensors he did the following ----
DSC03324a.JPG
So primed then mist coated by john, and flatted by me (in front of the heater of course!!!)
We ordered a litre of a high gloss satin black - in other words just off a full gloss black

he then took them into 'the booth of paint magic'
and let me in to take pictures!!!

When they were all painted they were left to dry.
the paint dried to a much more matt finish than I wanted so Uncle John went to his 'alchemy' bench, got some magic additives and made up a more shiny satin mix- this is why he's Uncle john, cos when I want something, I'm like the needy Nephew, that's why he cringes when i start the sentence with 'Uncle John is it possible to......'
anyway i got a call out and he recoated while they were still tacky saving me another stint infront of the heater, he says I'm not allowed to see them till they are fully dry later today, so I'm giddy about seeing them today, first shiny bits to put into storage till the rest is done!!!!
More soon!!!

Well after my training for the JOGLE this morning (read achy legs, sore back side, wind ruddied face after 27 miles on the push bike)
I went up to the yard to show willing!!! - I knew I wouldn't last long but things needed priming etc ready for a day of shuffling parts and flatting down surfaces.
When I got there, good old 'Uncle' John had been a busy little B!!!!!!!

won't bore you with the rest of the pics they aren't as clear as those

Things are progressing slowly, but to do it right, takes a little time - 3 hours on the dash binnacle alone rubbing down (and that was after the hour or so stripping it down in the kitchen-and that was after the hour or so it tok me to get it off the car!!! and so it goes on) but it looks spot on to me.

I know its pedantic, but, as the dash is all apart I looked at the speedo, the inside of the glass was covered in white bits- so me being me, I took it apart, night before last, while waiting for the kettle to boil, gave the glass a clean and blew out the bits while sipping my good old Yorkshire tea,
problem was that the cleaning seems to have charged the glass with static, so as soon as i put it back together, hey presto a lovely glazing on the glass of white powder again, and at the same time I noticed a little surface rust on the silver bezel just behind the glass.
DSC03439a.JPG
The white paint inside that's used to reflect the light around the speedo display is just like primer and after 40 odd years has started falling out with it's self and so if you rub it you get a finger that looks like you have just had an accident with the talcum powder.
DSC03434a.JPG
Conversation
'Uncle John have you got some white paint i can just blast in here after I have cleaned it up'
'Yes, and i'm spraying a merc silver today so if you cut out those six rivets and are careful with the glass and get it all out, and rub it all down i will do the bezel as well'
'ok thanks'

It's fiddley to get it all apart you have to grind off some tiny rivets took me a good hour with a steady hand but i'm glad i did now
so we rubbed and sprayed and left them to dry
will be giddy as a kipper when i see them today

Speedo head is not a sport one , they are all 100MPH , Really early cars ie. the metal ended dash type and some slightly later MK1s had the 1 , 2 , 3 and 4 marks , this dissapeared on standard cars early on only to reappear on the sport ones . Sport markings are 1 = 30 , 2 = 48 and 3 = 70 . There is no 4 .
Therefore Id say your speedo is original and Colin is correct .

I'm getting a little worried about the relationship between GLAddis and Uncle john!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

He's paying a lot of attention to her at the moment, and especially about the way she looks,
for instance:---
After I spent a day getting the tank back to bear metal, He painted it!
(still wet, but you know how impatient you get sometimes to get a photo)
DSC03413a.JPG
The other day when her paint on the tank had dried he noticed a few imperfections!!!!!
DSC03426a.JPG
DSC03427a.JPG
And uncle John wasn't happy with the reactions showing, so before I could get back from the next job i was on he had it rubbed back down and recoated!!
now its dry its like this all over
DSC03476a.JPG
He's paying a lot of attention to detail!!!!
After I had cleaned the top of the sender unit back to shiny, he even gave that a clear coat to stop it fading!!!
Mind you - he's just making sure she looks her best, I'm not complaining- just don't want all my favours used up at once!!!
or too close a relationship between the two of them

Post by sammy the sturgeon »

Well seen as i can't get her inside and get to her body - I'm fiddling with her bits!!!
And I'm after a little help.

The heater box,
I'm guessing they were not like this originally,
DSC03569a.JPG
but the cover has been fitted under the screws of the air box and and window diverter, so the air box has been out to have it fitted
It's neatly cut around, and fits very snug, (I had pulled the bottom away in the pic)
It was originally blue to match the interior - but the gold paint person got their brush to it!

Anybody seen one before?
DSC03579a.JPG
it was glued down to the air box and the transfers for the heater are now stuck to the back of it

The help I need - the flap inside the box is loose and flops about and i have worked out that some form of arm fits here to hold the flap steady.
DSC03566a.JPG
has anybody got any pictures of one, what it looks like, so I can make one????

i knew it was rough as the bleed had snapped off so i have a replacement for it already,
but it has left its mark inside - so there was more cleaning to do on the box its self

Annnyyyyway- I'll not get bogged down with bits I still need for a moment!
I spent the day yesterday stripping and cleaning up the components and treating them with rust treatment

and the grill bought off capriman (very helpful bloke ) like this

and then like this just before the rust treatment

so now they are in a pile for when some primer is going spare!!!

I work on the theory that rust removers never get it all off, either a good wire brushing or grinding, if it hasn't got it off and got back to shiny new metal, it needs new metal, I then treat any lumps and bumps where rust might have been with rust remedy.

after treatment- me and the grill in front of the fire!!

I haven't experimented much - i need to with treatments because the underside needs some kind of preventative on it once its all back to bare metal.

So far my research has shown that tea, drip fed almost, keeps my finger on the power button much longer, till things are shiny!!!

Thats true - proven by the grill, thick and minging, but not so rusty on the front - but on the back where it was the original spray paint rusty as a rusty thing.

Today has been quiet work wise, and as Uncle John only had a spoiler to paint he was over my shoulder all day shouting 'next'
So while we had the opertunity, we got on with some bits.

He got out the red oxide as these bits are a little more rusty than the rest and even though I have cleaned them back to shiny, and treated them with rust killer, he wants to do red oxide primer, normal primer, flat, and then top coat- just as a belt and braces thing,

So today was treat the rest of the heater box with rust killer
DSC03635a.JPG
and get it in red oxide, did the accelerator surround and the other bit of the heater box, dip stick top
DSC03638a.JPG
The grill, the heater window diverter
DSC03631a.JPG
Accelerator pedal, and heater flap and the two window stops that fit in the doors.
DSC03641a.JPG
Long long day, but productive, next is grey primer then a stack of wet hand flatting, before top coat.

First things first - A huge thank you to ANRW who got a heater arm 'thingymajig' in the post and it arrived on friday.
i also picked up a heater blower of Ebay, and it has a motor and fan and works!! so there's more for me to play with.

Coming back to an earlier point, If you have been following some of the earlier postings you will remember that there was a reaction on the paint on the petrol tank that uncle John wasn't happy about, and we wondered if there had been something still on the tank that had reacted- i.e. I hadn't degreased it, or rubbed it down properly.
Well we got some more reactions on things, so had a closer look at things, Uncle john rang the paint mixers and asked what it could be.
They dropped a 'none-sensical' bomb shell,
The red oxide is a synthetic paint!
now I'm not the font of all knowledge on this so my explanation may be shot down by those in the know, but as I understand it, unless you are very very careful you can only put synthetic paint on top of synthetic, so why they would have a synthetic as a base coat? I have no idea, a cellulose based, base coat will take any top coat, so why not use that, i know there are all sorts of rules and regulations on VOR's these days but it just seems a bit daft.
Any way the technical explanation from uncle john boiled down to my understanding is: if you have synthetic base and put cellulose on top too thick, when its wet, the cellulose bites into the synthetic and will react!
Two ways for us to get over it,
1. remove all the synthetic,
2 use a dust coat of cellulose, sprayed very dry and thin to create a barrier then when its properly dried give it a top coat.
so we went with the theory of option 2 and if it reacts then revert to option 1.
and as primer is easier to rub off we (uncle john did- I watched) coated things with a dust coat of primer. and then went and left them and had a cuppa.
It's hard drinking a cuppa with crossed fingers!!!

the culprit!!! the red oxide!

And now the painted bits all done!!!
Some pics are a bit dark they were after being taken out of the booth

-I'm not being too particular am I???
needed painting didn't it - just to protect it right????
just a light dusting of paint so it will still transfer heat!!!
Im working on the theory that even if it's not going to be seen - i will have piece of mind that it will be protected
DSC03659a.JPG
and though hopefully these will not be seen for a long long time, they needed the full treatment didn't they???
DSC03651a.JPG
and of course in here needed protecting!!!!
DSC03654a.JPG
still to do!!

Re: GLAddis! (408 GLA)- OKU 389A Dwarfs Bongo's!!!!

Post by sammy the sturgeon »

Got to thinking, like you do when work is a little slow and the paint shop is full of tools!!
It's been a little foggy on occasion and the Imp lights aren't the brightest in the world in those conditions so out came a spare board and a pen and the kettle got put on!!!
fateful, once you put pen to paper how many others start chipping in with ideas!
So i thought a nice little mounting plate to drop down from the cross member to mount a fog light in!
thats when the trouble started!!
DSC03671a.JPG
A plates no good it needs to have some strength to keep it stable, and the back of it would get hit by so much road debris it wouldn't last ten minutes before it corroded away, a box type thing then!
but hang on how would I mount it- quick look at the rear crossmember- flange on the bottom looks like a good place.
so on to drawing number three, cuppa number two, etc.

Uncle John chipped in'
"It's a 60's car you need DWARF'S BONGO'S!!!!!!!!!!!"

And my box suddenly became round!!!

So a scan of the 'stores'- (under every bench and in every corner to find something to make it out off)
came up with some tubing- a little too thick on the walls but the ideal diameter for mounting the lights.
DSC03672a.JPG
marked with tape to make sure there was enough room for the rear of the light a piece was cut,
DSC03678a.JPG
yep looks ok, but what about two fog lights??? even better visibility?
DSC03680a.JPG
then the tea cup was empty, and you know what happens in those few minutes while the kettles boiling don't you!!!
(on a side note- I'm sure alllll the middle east problems could have been sorted by now if they just sat down filled a large kettle and chatted, while it was boiling, some good/bad idea's pop up in those few minutes, get discussed and sifted and a plan of action comes out of it!!!!)
REVERSE LIGHT???- I'm not sure who said it but yeah!
