GLA ddis.......

It's been a strange affair with GLAddis in the month or so I have known her -
I mean, I wasn't looking for another woman in my life,
And then suddenly she turned up,
Out of the blue,

A friend of mine rang me and asked if i could pick her up,
Turned out she was in a love triangle and disturbing the relationship between a GT6 and a double garage,
So being a good mate to the garage, I took her off his hands.

I was told at 47 years of age, she was ready for the scrap heap,
He told me She has a little trouble with her heart, saying she is a little warped in the head, and the body work needed a little surgery, but that essentially, she was no trouble to sort out, would be low maintenance once the ground work was done,
And came with no baggage like a woman of that age normally has,
you know the usual ---
- An ECU system that one day promised the world and the next was attached to a newer motor with bigger brasher enlarged cylinders.
- There weren't any multiple little injectors lurking around who's only purposes are to take up your time, pressure your cash and then blow it all out in one big blast into a million molecules! and tell you 'Your only a carburettor, you will never be my REAL Injector pump!'
- No fancy skeleton electrical systems in the closet waiting for a special occasion to come out and bear all the history, with embarasing pictures of what she got up to years ago, while trying out 'something new'!!!
and so on.

So porporting to be able to give me an easy trouble free life I gave her a chance.

And the next thing I knew she was hitching a lift on my truck!
DSC02785a.JPG
DSC02786a.JPG
DSC02787a.JPG
DSC02788a.JPG
Started off as any new relationship does, you think about.....
-Wineing and dining her (put her on the ramp, show her a new shiny set of spanners, ply her with fluids and see if anything free's up)
-Think about buying her a new dress to accentuate the good -(shiny wheels and big wheel arches)
-Offering her a little stability (uprated shocks and springs, and changing a little of the suspension geometry)
-Getting her a pampering weekend at a facial and massage spa (loosen up all the ceased bits and replace lots of perishables with modern stuff)
-Getting her nails and skin done at the beauty parlour (in the paint shop for a full 'spray tan' in the latest colour)
-Exploring your limits!!! and knowing when to stop (replacing the drum brakes with discs)

And then as a little time passes.
You realise that she is what she is,
An original,
And what made you like her, is what she is!

Now if she were a bit of a rouge, you might want to change her,
But she's not she's a mild mannered old lady

So GLAddis was saved from the scrap heap (applies to both humans and cars!) and a love hate relationship began!

Since i have known her there have been three blood injuries, and yesterday she hospitalised me!!!!
Giving me time to write this!!!
and more on the story to come!!! :o :o

^^ That's great!  Nicely written! Now you have to keep up that style of narrative for the whole restoration!

Lovely car too, by the look of it! I think you are right; for such an honest, unmolested old lady, it's be a shame to stick 'er in a miniskirt and some heels and expect her to be able to keep up with a young whippersnapper, similarly attired... and expect 'er to look 'alf decent too! :P

yeah having a good poke around the old girl she definately needs o/s rear arch - possibly lower wing section, to make an easy weld, the rear o/s corner and the battery housing, and that's it. --at this stage :D ---hoping later its not  ---

Lifted the carpets and the floor is solid, cills are all good with a nice ring to them when you wrap your knuckles on them, rather that the famous 'filler thud'.
Got her up on the ramp and she has surface rust underneath but that's all, no rot, so (doesn't everyone say this) should be straight forward, as time allows.

So first thoughts turned to the engine.
DSC02789a.JPG
and as you might be able to see from the picture No2 spark plug is at a funny angle!!!
There's no water in her and the water pump is ceased solid.
So head gasket at least for starters and a look at the plug in No.2
DSC02790a.JPG
turned out it was the ceramic that had snapped but as you can see they have been in there for years, so i applied loads of wd and resisted the temptation to get the long bar on them for a few days- more on that one later!!!!

So as Henry the 8th said ----- Off with her head!!!!
wanted to have a good look at all the internals and how it all fitted together as i hadn't seen under an Imp 'boot/bonnet/engine cover' before, so - engine out after lots of reference pictures (finally found a use for a camera on a phone!!!)
DSC02791a.JPG

and then the removal began.............

So GLAddis!!!

Well I got her into the yard,
You know us blokes like to show off where we work to our new women!!! (and our women to our work collegues too)
and a couple of the guys were eying her up as she rolled in, :) . The young ones passing comment that for an old girl, she wasn't too bad - but she wasn't their type, they prefer the younger brasher models!!

The older guys were a little more lustful of her, I saw them taking crafty glances under her skirt and down the top of her dress, checking out her body work.

I took her to the quiet 'long term ramp' at the back to give her a little privacy as I checked her over, and straight away decided she needed her heart lovingly looked at,

I coated her in wd to all the parts that would need loosening, and left her a couple of days while i spoke to her friends and people who knew her to do a little background checking on her

turns out she had no passport( VIN plate) so i wasn't sure what or who she really is/was- on digging about over those few days i found that she had been raped of her original name (reg number) by slightly latharious means!!!!
DSC02969a.JPG
After a little further investigation i found out i could discover her true identity from the number on her heart, so i paid her a visit and started searching around.

Its amazing how a woman can distract you from your original plan and that number two spark plug was just getting the better of my curiosity, I had to get my hands on it!!!!!! (ohh errrr missus)

After a little coaxing, and, I'd noticed previously that number 1 spark plug was already half way out,
I tried the old spark plug spanner trick on her, it worked a treat and her eyes lit up
She let me get it in the right place, but true to the morals of a girl this age she wasn't letting anything up easily. A little twist of the spanner and there she was - half the plug in the spanner and the remainder still in the head- flush with the spark plug hole!!!!
(tease  )
DSC02794a.JPG

So gone was all the thoughts that a little tender loving care would sort out her heart and head problems! - I'm no doctor, but, surgery is whats needed here, to sort out all those typical heart and head problems!!

So I decided (for her) that one way or the other she needed the surgery, I took the doctors 'before' pictures to reference what her original condition was and so at the end of it all i could see the improvement, and that after the op i could get all her bits back in the right place to make her purr and look pretty again!

They were going well till last Saturday!
While kneeling on the ramp leaning into her and twisted, i tried standing up!!!
my knee cartilige did an 'exit stage right' !!!

While I'm there with my leg locked solid and the Ambulance men were deciding how to extract me, the words 'Oh an Imp' didn't get the usual welcoming response!!!!
After a dose of morphine, to get me out, and in the Ambulance on the way to hospital I was way to happy to tell them all about it!!!!

Well While i have been house-bound I did what little i could on the interior,
from this -
DSC03100a.JPG
which was all covered like this
DSC03101a.JPG
with "curtains" removed
IMAG0435a.jpg
.
.
.

Then the (week long) process of this
mark them all out on some 3mm mdf (bit more rigid than hardboard)

Cut all the parts out
IMAG0426b.jpg
Cut the vinyl out and glue at the top edge (using whatever you have to hand to weigh it down while the glue dries)
IMAG0427a.jpg
Then add a little wadding to give it some 'life'
IMAG0430a.jpg
and leave that for the glue to dry

Didn't take too many pictures of the next bit as my hands were full
but you need to stretch it, glue and staple it in place, feather the corners on the back,
and you end up with panels like this -

The lower dashboard fitted to your car (the bit with the glove box door etc) isn't original - but *may* be a rare Rokee accessory from the period. I haven't seen one in black vinyl before but it looks similar (along with the padded roll bar cover to the right of the binnacle and the door caps). We have one in Walnut that will one day end up in our 64 Imp...

I was wondering about that because when you open the glove box door theres no 'bottom' to the glovebox, you can just see
DSC03074a.JPG
was going to ask if anyone had any pictures of what should be in there.

There's no bottom, or box, or anything so if you threw something in there it would just hit the passengers feet!!

Cleaner ones will be up soon,
but first,
the Crank breather, it has in it like an element, well when i took mine off and touched it to see if it was soft - like an oil filter element or hard, it just disintigrated.
Now i haven't seen any one mention anything about the bit inside anywhere here, should it have just crumbled? and are they a replaceable 'service' type part?
any help appreciated

Difficult to get now i suspect , you could blank the hole in the block and fit the later standard one by changing the oil filler neck

I think Malcolm had some of the elements at National this year.

I have sealed one up in the past with a penny washer, some silicon sealer and a bolt though... as Dave says, you do need the later type filler neck with a breather outlet otherwise they pressurise!!

Any clues what the element is made of?
I was wondering if something 'similar' to this,
http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/MINI-CRANK-CASE-B ... 5887e09de4

stripped down, rubber washers either end, so any pressure has to go through the filter,
inserted in the original case would be any good?????

RELATIONSHIP UPDATE:::
Met up with GLAddis last night to talk a few things over!!
She's sorry for the injury she caused me and the time we have been apart, but it was quite late on at night so instead of dwelling on it, i pulled her seats out!!!
Not too gentlemanly I know, but when actions speak louder than words, that's what needs doing!
under all her seats and carpets she still appears sound, I'm still preparing myself for a shock when i get her naked and see what needs seeing to
theres a little surface rust on the shelf under the back window but that's all that's new.
So her seats are in my dinning room and need stripping down, one of the frames has snapped so needs completely stripping so i can weld it, then paint it and seen as I'[m doing that one- the other will need doing too,
Cant wait to be fully back on my feed so i can get back the the basics (Engine and body) rather than doing things the wrong way around and doing finishing bits first!
Anyway- clean 'er' pictures of bits i have cleaned as i stripped them
I like to get rid of most of the crud before attacking, As I hate doing so much washing of clothes, so as i take them off i give them a 'first clean'
and when i did i found all sorts of stampings on the engine,
DSC02822a.JPG
DSC02824a.JPG
and on the bottom of the sump
DSC02966aa.JPG
the gearbox was in the same state as the engine but after first clean didn't look too bad, the advantage of all the crud is the aluminium under it is nice and shiny
