New Zealand Husky and Ginetta G15

Post by KiwiHusky »

Hi all, I thought I would finally start a thread on my Christchurch (N.Z.) based cars. They are my 1968 Hillman Imp Husky and My 1973 Ginetta G15.

Image

Here is the Husky outside my work last Friday parked next to my friend's 1960 Skoda Felicia. This is a fairly typical occurrence in the Air N.Z. car park as I drive the Husky to work every day and Steve brings the Skoda fairly often too. Not a bad effort for him considering it's the middle of winter here at the moment!

Image

Here is the Husky's steering wheel which is out of the original George and Peter Bevan built Imp club racer which I bought from Jonathan Bevan last year and is, apparently the only item left of that club racer after it was crashed.

Image

And here is a shot of Me competing in the G15 at Hawkswood hillclimb last year.

Cheers, Simon.

Very nice Simon, that steering wheel is a thing of true automotive beauty - regardless of it's heritage.
If I told you I was a pathological liar, would you believe me?

Very nice, Simon.

Is the steering wheel a Cortina 1600E wheel with a replacement horn-push centre? Like this:

G15s are achingly pretty cars, IMHO. :) I would love to own one but, at 6 feet 4 inches tall, I have my doubts that I'd fit! There are those that think I could, though... :?

Thank you for posting the pics. Yours looks like a lovely example!

Thanks for all the positive feedback guys and here is an interior shot taken by NZ classic car magazine for an article they ran on the G15 a while back.

I thought I would put up some images of the Husky's travels around Christchurch after our devastating earthquakes in February 2011. We had over 12,000 earthquakes in the 18 months that followed, which equates to one earthquake every hour of every day for a year and a half. As you can imagine sleep deprivation and stress were constant companions over that time and many people simply left the city for good. Touch wood, things have been fairly quiet recently and long may that continue. Miraculously, the Husky came through unscathed and has stayed in one piece after being used daily during that time over roads that made Bagshot proving ground look like a bowling green. Throughout 2011, car repair shops were doing a brisk business in rebuilding suspensions, replacing damaged rims, puncture repairs and torn sumps!

Image
This is the road down our hill -most of the rocks have been cleared now although there is now a safety barrier in place that reduces the road to one lane.

Image
This building has now gone and this is an empty lot

Image
This dual carriageway suffered a severe collapse (it's next to the Avon river) and has a completely new retaining wall and has been fully rebuilt -it has only recently reopened after 18 months of work!

Image
This footbridge over the Avon river was twisted and crushed as the riverbanks moved closer together -the power of mother nature is awe inspiring and frightening at the same time!

Simon, it's good to hear you are still in Christchurch. Are you still on the Port Hills? I was there in Jan 2012 but not this year but hope to go early next year. The forces of nature are awesome and I will never forget the 2011 earthquake, especially the noise. Glad to see the Husky is in use, any competition in the Ginetta? Best wishes for the future and I will drop in next year.

Hi Ian, nice to hear from you. Yes we are still on the hills in Mount Pleasant. (or Mount Plywood as it has been called) Hopefully by the time you visit next year our house will have been repaired, because we still have not been told when it will be done and we are living with plywood walls and plywood windows, (is that an oxymoron?) subsided floor, torn Gib wall linings and gaps in our walls after 2 years! I have been doing the odd event in the Ginetta , but not much really and I don't drive it on the roads here much at all.
Cheers, Simon.

I love your Husky and Ginetta G15! 8) 8) Fabulous cars!

I couldn't believe the seismic violence unleashed on New Zealand a couple of years ago. Simply staggering and without precedent. :| Speaking personally, I cannot imagine trying to cope with the conditions that you and your fellow New Zealanders are having to endure. I know life goes on but even so... :? I salute you! :)

Thanks for the compliment - much appreciated :D Sometimes I look back and think "how did we get through that?" Especially the first month when we had no power, no toilet and no running water and had to queue up to collect water to live on. We didn't have a shower until 6 days after the earthquake and the roads were destroyed, and yet we still managed to get up and go to work each day after no sleep. (aftershocks would go on all night) It seems like hell looking back on it.
Cheers, Simon. :) Husky003 Ginetta003
