my Imp Sport - IMP69

Post by sunbeammadd » Sat Feb 06, 2010 3:14 am

It just occurred to me that I've never got around to putting an entry for my Imp in here. Here are some pics:

1100

2800

It was restored during 1991/92, and since then has been gradually upgraded with 930cc engine in Sport spec, Janspeed exhaust, Ivan Tighe cam, Montes and Spax, Superlites. When it was restored I also plumbed in a front radiator - at the time the HE radiators weren't yet available or maybe I just wasn't aware of them then, so a front mounted one seemed the old practical option for Australian conditions.

Since then the car has been all over the place with me and used for motorsport. It tends to lead a gentler life now though as with 3 young kids I need more room during the week. It's mainly a weekend plaything now.

Aaaaaaah! Rust!!

Post by sunbeammadd » Sat Feb 06, 2010 3:34 am

Up until now I've been able to boast that my Imp has a completely rust-free shell. Not anymore.

As I don't often carry a lot in it I hadn't opened the hatch for a while. This week I opened it and spotted what looked suspiciously like a rust bubble under the seal.

I lifted the seal and sure enough the lip that the seal clips to is starting to go.

I've wire brushed the rust patches and neutralised them, but wondering whether I should take the whole area back to bare metal just to be sure.

Fortunately I found it before it rusted right through, so hopefully it hasn't spread beyond here.

I would mate, or it will just come back and bite you in the arse! By the look of your foties you`ll probably get away without disturbing the paintwork near or under your stainless trim as well, which is a good thing :P

Thanks Drew. Looks like I've got something to keep me busy for a couple of weekends!

Nice looking car, Russ! It's about time you had a Readers' Cars thread!

I agree with Drew on the bodywork issue. A local repair ought to suffice.

Still working away at stripping back the paint in the hatch opening. After trying a few things I've settled on a dremel as the most effective way of doing it.

I've been thinking it might be a good idea to create the drains in the corners that late cars had to prevent this happening again.

I see Gary Henderson made his own as below:

1235

I'll have to start looking for something I can use to make the same shape.
