Post by Bevan IMP »

Hi All

Just thought I would post a couple of pictures of our new car, its being built to celebrate 40 years of my grandfathers Championship wins.
The camera has changed the colour of the car so it looks a bit pale in the shots. The wheels are not the finished items (they need to be alot wider!!!)

It is being built in the traditional Bevan way (In a garage) using my Grandfathers tools.

We have a long way to go......

Hi John

From a visual point we are using the 1972 car with the fibre glass arches etc as our base car. We are trying to combine the best bits of all the cars. This is what we are aiming for:
Image
To allow it to be raced today, all the safety equipment needs to be modern which doesnt really fit in with the 70's spec. The supsension is the same as the 70's spec other than the shocks which are double adjustable racing units front and rear.

The front brakes are the Viva disks and Girling callipers with the standard drums to the rear.

I will try and post some more picutres as work proceeds (Slowly!!!)

Just thought I would add a few more pictures of the car with the new wheels. The tyres need to be sorted as they are too high a profile.
We have also just started the 998cc engine...looking for a JK gearbox.

Wow................!! :o

Hi Jonathon, fantastic work and really nice to see the progress.

I know what you're going through having been there myself a couple of years ago!

http://www.theimpclub.co.uk/viewtopic.php?f=33&t=5600

Unfortunately had to sell mine due to ill health but now all sorted and just about to start another Imp project once I've finished the current build (see below) hopefully in the spring.

Imp will be race orientated along the lines of my last one.

Keep up the great work

Cheers

A few years ago the Autosport did a run down of the top 50 racing cars of all time. The IMP was number 30 with number 29 being a williams F1 car.

This is the picture of Les Nash pushing Bill. Les is driving the 72 Championship car, which was probably the ultimate GP 2 Bevan IMP.

I just noticed that a car was destroyed at Thruxton in 73, I think this was the twin headlight car.

I havent posted anything for a while so i thought i would show you my front supsension setup with the brakes etc fitted. We are using Girling alloy Calipers with viva disks and hubs. The shocks are slightly different as they are double adjustable coilovers.
Image

I have just ordered the front radiator which will combine the oil and water cooling in one unit. It should be ready in around 2-3 weeks.

My dad has just finished the ports on the head. We are planning to build an intial engine to get the car up and running so we can test the setup of the car asap.

Hi

I have to say that you are all very observant, the engine was actually built with an original cam cover with standard studs and nuts.

As you have already guessed we can’t get a socket or spanner on the nuts.

I am going to put an old socket in a lathe and see if we can reduce the size to keep the nuts. If not I will get some K Nuts which have a reduced socket size (I think !!!!).

With regards to the oil filter………yes it has the pick up points for the oil lines and the pressure relief valve is not adjustable (Yet).

I am waiting for a roller release bearing for the clutch and clutch fork which has stopped me starting to put everything together. Even if the engine never runs it will look the part.

Stuart..........I need as much help as i can get, i did my my back lifting the engine in the garage.

Nearly Finished....................

Post by Bevan IMP »

Hi All,

Just thought I would give you a quick update on the car, as you can see the engine is now in and to my amazement started first time.

Image

We have entered the car on Sunday 29th at Motorsport at the Palace which should be a nice day out if anyone wants to come along. We are booked on the 30th for a Display stand at Brands Hatch.

We are now waiting for our new slick tyres and a couple of minor items.

The last thing will be placing my Grandfathers name on the side of the car !!

Crikey, it's been a few years since I last saw that photo! Wasn't that hanging in his lounge? And was that the one that held the lap record at Brands for many years? I was lucky enough to see him at work in his shed. We took round some new valves and the 998 block he built and he just felt the valves, got a magnet out and tossed them aside and pulled out some others from a drawer.

As for the car your building, simply amazing. Is that engine painted silver or blasted/dipped?

Re: Bevan IMP- completed

Post by Bevan IMP »

Spent another afternoon at Brands Hatch.

We have a misfire at the top end which is due to the points bouncing. We now are on the hunt for a decent set of points which were not made in China!!!!

We had a photographer from Retro Cars and Autosport taking some pictures. We even managed to have the track to do some action pictures taken from the photographers car.

All we have left to do is the front anti roll bar which is currently being made.

Hi I was wondering if you could help me. I am in the process of converting a standard imp into a Bevan, basically to look like the image above. I was planning on using 13x8 rears and 13x7 fronts, but for suspension I think the 800lb springs may be a bit too ruff for road. The car will be predominantly be used for road but also for track. How bad really are 800lb rears? Have you got any suggestions as to how to get the car to the same height? Many thanks, Tom.

Bevan IMP goes to Scotland............

Post by Bevan IMP »

Hi All,

A sad day in the Bevan house !!!!!!!!

Today we parted with our car which will probably be the last Bevan IMP built to Group 2 spec.

The car went to Tom from Scotland and will sit in his heated garage.
Image

I wish Tom all the best with the car, I understand he is looking to show it at various event's.

Best Wishes
