Some very nice comments guys and I wont even attempt to take any credit. I just paid the bills as they came in, Robin Lackford Engineering have a great bunch of guys there and you can see what they can do.

To answer a couple of questions:

How many hours? - Well, they worked for about 5 months working on it 5/6 days a week, every week. It did sit in the garage for some time whilst they had other projects on the go. I do have the final bill and I think it was something like 450 hours metal work and 100 hours paint and prep but would have to check that.

How much £££? - Well, all I'll say is I'd never of dreamt of being able to buy a modern sports car for the sum but somehow I ended up spending way too much which probably explains why it continued and is alive today. You dig a hole, it gets deeper and one day you just decide it ain't worth turning back, just grin and bear it.

Saving a car that was too far gone a few years back... yes, there were times I almost wish I had given up (usually every few weeks when an even bigger stage payment from the previous one came in), but I think you get that however big or small the job is. It's part of restoration. The end result makes you smile though and I am now very happily putting the shell back together. It's my version of retail therapy.

Andy, it would be a pleasure to bring it along to a Sussex meet soon after it gets taxed and MOT'd. You guys have always been so enthusiastic and helpful, even if I was a Surrey IMPoster.

And most importantly..... Yes, it was a marathon trying to upload all those photos.

Hope they didn't bill you for all the hours spent taking pics when they should've been working on the van!

Seriously though Pete, it looks superb and I look forward to seeing it in the flesh.

Just a few update photos as have been working on the van today:

Not the best of days today. In fact I was really quite annoyed. I started off well and finally got the remains of the bleed nipple out the king pin and was looking forward to getting 4 wheels on but ended the day with 2 wheel on the rear and removing the front one. Basically, I was sold a wheel bearing kit that was not for an Imp which confused me so removed the other hub to compare. That just started things off on the wrong foot. Wasted ages on this and decided to get something else done. Got some back lights fitted, straightened up the pipe work underneath but still need the clips to hold them against the bodywork. Went to assemble the geat syick/linkage but am missing the black plastic clip that the front of the choke cable sits in. Then the rain and wind picked up, the front of the car got wet and a chunk of wood got blown over and hit my new laminated screen and cracked it so that is now wasted... grrr.

Pete

Not a great day but could be worse, the screens replaceable (I know they ain't cheap but rather than than one of the panels)
I know its not easy working in a single garage but at this point in the assembly your best keeping the place tidy as it's so easy to trip/knock over stuff and do
mucho damage.

You will have good days, and when it finished you'll forget all the pain.

The rear window is safe inside the van, the windscreen was outside awaiting to find somewhere safe to put it as I'm currently taking over my parents house. The van is in the main garage, my dad has to park on the drive now, and a load of parts are stacked up in the other garage in such a way that they wont fall over on to my brother's MG Midget.

Must have a good clean up of the tools etc as it is getting a bit untidy and as said, a clean area is important.

Thanks for all the comments, as I say, I don't take any credit, I'm just putting it back together, they guys did a great job of the rebuild.

Much better day today after last week. Replacement brake pipe arrived and fitted so brake and clutch system complete. Uncle malc delivered a new wheel bearing kit and that is fitted. Just need a bolt for the caliper but essentially it could be dropped off the axle stands. Clark dawson supplied me with fuel/brake pipe clips for under the floor and they are all fitted and pipes secure. A few other bits fitted. Wheels removed and will be stripped, painted and new tyres this week. No photos as no real visual change today.

hopefully attachment has worked, not tried doing that before.

just a quick update as its been a while.

Engine and gearbox now fitted, all the underside is complete bar a couple of small jobs. Interior is going in nicely. Wheels now painted and new tyres fitted, chassis plate and registration plates now fitted. it all seems to be falling in to place now!

Outstanding jobs are now:
wire it all up
bleed brakes
fit petrol tank
finish fitting interior
Plumb in engine
fit rear window
tighten suspension bolts
sign writing
mot
test drives

enjoy and relax

can see the finish line down the home straight now so every day I don't get to spend on the van just frustrates me lol

Been a bit slow on here recently so just a few pics of the van. I'm off all week and working on it so really hoping to reach the end very soon. Dash just about wired up having made the mistake of forgetting to fit the washer jet pipe work. Carpets all fitted and rear windows in. Radiator went in today and engine pipework. Van expansion bottle cradle fitted. Slave cylinder leaked like a sieve but picked up replacement today and bleeding fluids tomorrow. Got some leads on the exact fount of lettering for the sign writing and will be getting that done soon.

Grr fitted a battery and tried to fire the engine up. Click . Click. And press the solenoid and the starter just whirs. Sounds like the starter that came with the engine is knackered. Also the water pump has a leak. The high beam warning works the wrong way round and the registration plate lights don't work, probably An earth. Nearly there though.

Pete,

My pump sprang a leak about 5 years back and it's still going strong, I think with use sometimes the seals bed in and and the leak stops, providing the bearings are ok then you won't do any harm in seeing how it lasts.

High beam light makes me think either the stick is wired backwards and high/low are swapped, or the warning lamp is off the dipped beam not main.

Keep up the good work

Been a while so time for a quick update.

The van is now mot'd and taxed. Didn't get it to national as the electrical fire was the final straw. Instead had a lovely week and a half away relaxing. The van got sign written and looks fab now. Pictures to come in the coming weeks. Had the AA out and the wiring loom is actually in good shape. Thankfully I caught it quick. The patrol man was keen to get it running but it was end of shift and as it would mean an hour drive home he thought it best not to rush so admitted defeat and called a flat bed. Percy was then transported from my parents and now resides in his new garage back at our home. All I need now is a dry day to roll him out and repair the wiring. Luckily it's only the white 12v that shorted on the body behind the dash and needs a new piece of wire about 45cm in length. We also discovered a second burn on the front nearside indicator new where it joins the main loom. Another easy fix. Then the rear belts need fixing in and a bit of a tidy up and we should be about ready for wicked Welsh.

Good and bad.

Got the rear seat belts fitted, new speedo fitted, fuel gauge now working and wiring all fixed since the fire. Took it for a drive and my second drive since the rest went further but not better. Got to the end of the road and it started to run very rough and cut out. Think the carb needs tuning as it seems to just about try and fire on full choke. Weird because it was running sweet when I first fired it up in July. Got to get my skates on as I have Thurs Fri and Sat to fix it as we are booked on a classic car tour Sunday and then www the following week.

He's alive :D

But he's not a happy bunny.

Had Mr Rooney over at the weekend and found several faults, some I knew about, some I didn't. The new coil was faulty, two new plugs were faulty, lots of sparking issues. Got some new bits and fitted them tonight and finally drove the van up the road. All seemed ok, idling a bit fast but that's an easy fix. Stopped in the next village and then the problems started again. Conked out, difficult to restart, conked out two more times getting back. Got it in the garage and found the solex chamber was full to the brim with petrol and peeing out everywhere. Disconnected the battery and have left it.

Deeply saddened that it wont make WWW now and we will have to go modern for another year. Still, it's almost there!!!
