Re: PES 989J... "The Pest" ....in primer
Today was the day for a second coat of primer and some stone chip on the underside of the sills and arches of The Pest.
First I need to buy a bit more primer filler to finish of the top of the bonnet, engine cover and rear crossmember cover.
A gallon of primer filler on the car as it is now. Although I guess I have rubbed a good bit of it of earlier in the week
Cheers
Col
Once I had the Gravitex in I left it for an hour or so before hitting it with the filler primer once again.
Looks very similar to previous photos but I can assure there's more paint on and its getting closer to a top coat..First I need to buy a bit more primer filler to finish of the top of the bonnet, engine cover and rear crossmember cover.

Re: PES 989J... "The Pest" ....in primer
A bit of fine fettling this past week on the Pests arches and wings with filler and primer going on then rubbing of only to be done several times as I am fussy.
Hoping I have got it as close as I can for the final coat sometime very soon now.. I removed all the masking from the doors and windows as I want to replace them with fresh masking for the top colour to go on. Cheers

Re: PES 989J... "The Pest" ....in primer
Not a blog but progress on an Imp that is on its way to completion and not what has been done many many pages ago. Bob
It's happening now well a few hours ago..
I will have Scott cast an eye over it on Wednesday before I hit it with the colour in case I've missed anything.
Definitely a good feeling having it close to a colour ready to be going on it after all these years.
Cheers

Re: PES 989J... "The Pest" ....in primer
I had a plan last weekend that I would be applying colour to the Pest this weekend but after the monthly meeting that we had at the barn on Wednesday it wasn't to be.
One or two bits I was oblivious too or possibly just ignored were noticed do today I had a go at rectifying them. One was the rhs front wing which is a Radford panel that doesn't really have the right curve or shape to it so I reshaped it a bit to make it less flat. This took a few hours of filling and rubbing down before a coat of primer filler once again.
With the spray gun out I thought of putting some colour onto some of the awkward areas at the rear where the rain drip channel is above the engine and a bit of colour around the rear window and body joint/seam. Hopefully now the body is that bit closer for the colour next weekend.
Cheers

Sorry pal, thought you would end up have a go
Don't want to be a pain but have a look again at the swage lines, hopefully it's just the photos, they look to be flaring out rather than narrowing as it heads to the front.
for encouragement

Tell me about it, I've got a drawer full of T shirts.
Thought I was nearly ready for paint on the Marina but spending days getting the doors and front end to fit as I want,
You'll get there, just like Karate Kid, Wax on Wax off

Re: PES 989J... "The Pest" ....in primer
It is, always good to have another pair and sometimes 2 pair of eyes look over what your doing.
John, Scott you were both bang on that the swage and the indent weren't quite right. Thank you.
Closer now I'm hoping
Spent a good few hours measuring and rubbing down filler etc once again as well as fitting the doors as the inside edges and hinges have had colour on them.
Guess what???
They were a bit out now to on the swage line so out came the rubbing block on those too. .
Gave them a coat of primer as it helps see what's going on and came home. Cheers

Re: PES 989J... "The Pest" ....in magnificent technicolour
The other night I had a session with The Pest rubbing down the primer with P400, dusting it down then tac ragging everything in site in preparation for some magnificent technicolour.
This evening more tac ragging just to make sure, soak the floor, mix up some paint and apply the colour. More rubbing down in store later on next week, wet this time then final top coat hopefully before some lacquer.
Cheers

Thank you.
A bit of a rub down from the previous splash of colour last week and more glossiness applied this evening to give a fuller coat of paint. That will be that until after Christmas.
Have a great Christmas everyone.

Gary,
Thank you, still to buff it all up etc but chuffed with the result. I painted the door checks and hinge pockets before I fitted the doors properly.
At least with the doors fitted first you can sort out the gaps and swage line alignment. That's what they did at the factory and it makes sense.
Cheers to Andy and Baz.
Went upto the Pest this evening and peeled of all the masking and rested the bonnet and grill in place and fitted the freshly painted wheels.. Cheers

Re: PES 989J... "The Pest" ....in magnificent technicolour
After a wee hurl up to Bannockburn yesterday to visit John and pick up some Waxoyl and a few spares I was at The Pest today filling it full of the waxoyl.
Messy job and I have to say the least enjoyable one I have done on the car. Got it done so now can sleep easy knowing it wont rust from the inside out.
Afterwards I fitted some sound insulation to the roof and the rear parcel shelf. got the roof done in a oner which was easier than I thought it would be.
The rear parcel shelf to a little longer as I filled in the lower ribs first then a full sheet over that.
Get more done on Sunday now.
Ohh.. I got the tyres put on the wheels too Gary.
Thanks Matt.
Cheers

Re: PES 989J... "The Pest" ....in magnificent technicolour
Peter,
I have a new headlining from Lesley sitting waiting to go in but realised the headlining stringer poles are corroded at one end on two of the three so they will need replaced before that gets done unfortunately.
Andy,
I couldn't honestly tell you what the sound deadening is all I know is it is on a 5 metre roll , self adhesive, 10 mm thick and closed cell so wont soak up any water.
Hope it does the job and keeping the noise out.
Cheers

Remember the stringers are all different so don't mix them up, they were originally colour coded at the factory though that's probably rubbed off by now.

Re: PES 989J... "The Pest" ....sound insulation
Scott,
That would be great if you have the headling stringers and they are in better nick than mine. Let me know when you find them and what you want for them.
Peter,
The Pest is a later car with 3 stringers or as it is at the moment more like 2 3/4.
Used up the rest of the sound insulation today and will be needing a little bit more for the rear seating area, wheel tubs and the front bulkhead. Happy with the result so far.
Also fed the new 3/4" front radiator pipework into the heater channels and out at the boot and engine compartments. Cheers

Wow Col- its looking fantastic!!! Its all now the fun job of building up your super sized Tamiya kit car
I'm quite jealous at the lovely smooth shiny finish on your paint. I painted mine in 34 degrees and combined with not being a very experienced painter along with the first time using 2 pak it came off finished a bit orange peely. I'll just live with it and use it

Re: PES 989J... "The Pest" ....sound insulation
Thanks Alex,
The photos make it look better than it is really but hope to give it a wet sa d then polish it to make it sooo much better.
It's good putting the parts on that have been stored away for goodness knows how long. I'm making a list of things that still need to be done and more importantly bought to get it nearer completion, it is quite a list..
Here is some other things I got done today. First on the list was the Cinquecento radiator and making sure it is sealed all around so the cool air has to pass through the fans at the rear. An alloy shroud will be fitted later to duct the hot air under the car.
Before the bonnet was fitted new hinges and gaskets were fitted along with a bonnet seal. I was a bit concerned that the seal may not fit with it being a fibreglass bonnet but it was fine. Scott you will notice I remembered to paint the bonnet prop too.
The heater was next on the list of parts to fit so in it went. There is still parts for the heater required mainly T pieces to feed it water from the 3/4" hose and back and probably a good idea to put in a bleed valve too.
Cheers

Re: PES 989J... "The Pest" ....H4 headlamp conversion
A few more bits and bobs attached to the Pest the last few days after some modifications to some parts including the headlamp bowls similar but not the same as Dave Lanes mods to his Imps allowing access to the H4 bulbs to the new lamps.
A hole cutter was used initially 90mm I think it was to get a big hole in the back of them making sure I didnt take out the spring tang as I went. After getting all the parts to fit the actual lamps themselves I realised my conversion had sidelights within the lamp so other holes were required to be made, first a 25mm hole in the inner bowl then I made a 45mm one in the outer bowl to get access to the side lamp bulb. In the car. Last night I decided to get some check straps onto the suspension as I have race springs in there and they kinda pop out when the suspension is at full extension.
Only got the fronts done as I ran out of M6 nylocs for the bolts, oops Also fitted the tool tray I made up and the support bracket for the fuel tank that will be going into it. Back at it this evening as a few parts have arrived including what I ordered from Graham, thank you, great service .
Cheers

Finished of the rear checks traps on the rear suspension tonight but forgot to take a photo.
I also fitted the front and rear lights though along with the grille and did take a photo. Not wired up obviously but in place

I like that idea of converting over to h4 headlights and making the backs accessible.
One of the first things I fitted to my imp after painting the shell was the headlights. It just made the wee car seem so much more complete straight away. Gives the car a face too.

Hey, Col. Where did you source your clear front lenses ? Mine (which were a set of those on ebay from Peru) went to the knackers yard a couple of years back, so I'm on standard front lenses albeit with modern LEDs in them and fly leads to earth.

Re: PES 989J... "The Pest" ....H4 headlamp conversion
Andy,
I got them from the same dude from South America as I read his address on the box last night before fitting them. Had them sat in a box of new bits to be fitted for at least 2 years I would imagine the last time he was probably on Ebay.
When I went to fit them I remembered a conversation on here saying they were a bit neat around the screw holes and they needed to be elongated which was true. Easily broken of you try to force them on without elongating the holes. The whole lense is possibly a little bit too wee compared to an original not by much but enough to notice if you have them next to each other.
Cheers

Ah. Yes. Oh well, not to worry. Someone may do them again one day. Mine eventually went cloudy and looked bad, to be honest. They are a little small all round, but look great when new. Take care of them.

A shame no one is doing them again Andy as I quite like them and hope mine don't go all cloudy like yours did.
Tonight i finished of the braided rake lines to the front brakes, fitted the wheels and tyres along with the steering column so I can move it about. Won't get back it now until Monday.

Making excellent progress Col, not long 'till it moving under it's own power rather than pushing it around.

Re: PES 989J... "The Pest" ....Ooooooh the headlining!!
Thanks folks, really chuffed with it going back together and looking how I imagined it would.
So after chatting over tackling fitting the headling last night at the local Edinburgh meeting with Scott and John I bit the bullet and had a go tonight.
Mainly this was to see how it will fit and what I need to do the final fit so it was a dry run tonight.
Most people who have spoken to about doing a headlining all started with "ooh the headlining!!!" filling me with confidence..
Here is how I left it this evening.. I ran out of clips and could probably do with stronger ones. See what the local stationer has tomorrow or a trip to Asda I guess.
Got to say thank you to Lesley for the headlining as it looks fab.
Cheers

Re: PES 989J... "The Pest" ....Oooh the headlining!!!!
Hi Colin,
Well done and a good idea to have a dry run. Don't be afraid to carefully pull it taut when you glue it as there is a bit of stretch in the vinyl but don't trim it until you're completely happy as you won't be able to reposition it if you get it wrong or if you cut it too much. A heater will then help remove any remaining creases. Plastic clothes pegs will do the trick - it's what I used!

Hi Lesley,
I thought a dry run would be the best way to make sure I had an idea how much material was there and the stringers were going to hold it all in place as they weren't the original stringers from the car.
Loads of material I may add which was good to see and I must have read your instructions about three times before I did anything with it. No cutting yet... Getting a friend to cut up the backboard above the window today so that may help for trimming the rear part later on.
Cheers

Looks neat. I too was worried about fitting the headlining (which was from another imp) but it was already stained from the original glue so no need to be too fussy.
It was still a great step to finish and instantly made the car feel more complete
Next time though I'll search for some nice porsche pasha fabric....

You could argue that for a proper factory look you have to show some glue on each of the pillars
My "top of the range" 1964 Singer Chamois has theses features

It probably didn't show at all when the car was first built - the glue tarnishes, and turns brown over the intervening years due to sunlight and heat.
I'm sure that even the dubious Quality Control of the day would have said something about it if it showed as it does now.

Now it is looking really good Colin i had thoughts about orange wheels and calipers ????? not my cup of tea but with the car in that colour now looks amazing combo gulf racing team colours one of my favourites and will be the chosen colour of my GT40.
I do think you should be trying to fit headlining with a roll cage in though i love doing that.

Peter,
He did have one but not for long I believe.
Anyway, headlining all glued in tonight and pleased with the result. Now that is done I can think about fitting the windscreen and the side windows before pushing it into the corner so I can paint the roll cage before fitting that.
Cheers

I doubt a pro company could have got it looking any better than that looks nice and taut and it would have cost a small fortune too.
How's the stiff neck though?
I have the older look type material to fit when the car comes back from painting (Minging Blue) , Lesleys moonstone textured type hope that looks as good.

Re: PES 989J... "The Pest" ....Oooh the headlining!!!!
Thanks very much Peter and only a small sum of £75.00 from Lesley Smith for the headlining. Worth every penny.
Worth taking a bit of time and not loosing the head if it is not going correctly. I ended up taking out the insulation rightly or wrongly where the stringers were placed so they could get vertical against the roof. Also did it over two evenings one side at a time.
Going to try and put in the rear windows tonight to keep it all looking as it is, might even take the windscreen up to but think that may be a two man job.
The neck is ok .
Cheers

Re: PES 989J... "The Pest" ....Oooh the rear side windows!!!
Thanks Scott
I have to say that the fitting of the headlining was a pleasure compared this evenings escapade to fit the rear side windows.. What a painful and frustrating thing to try and fit!!
After a couple of attempts I managed to get the lhs one fitted after some swearing and huffing and puffing. Attempted the rhs but gave up and came home.. Try again on Sunday.
Cheers

Re: PES 989J... "The Pest" ....Oooh the rear side windows!!!
Thanks Baz, a little bit closer.
Today I managed to get the rhs window fitted with a little help from my son who also helped me fit the drivers door to a more satisfying look to it. Best we could do considering it is from a race car originally and fibreglass. At least as good as Lunwoods attempt.
Engine cover went on as well and so much easier with an extra pair of hands to keep it in place rather than balancing it on your head etc.. I've always quite liked the idea of a bib spoiler on an Imp not only for looks but for its practical virtues on handling. When I repaired the front of the car I added brackets so I could fit one later.
First choice was using an abs plastic one from a Golf. Then I had a wee thought that a more traditional style may be worth a look at using aluminium mimicking the Hartwell style. Little undecided on which way to go even with using the alloy one I'm thinking of painting it in the body colour.
Decisions..
Cheers

Isn't the Dolomite Sprint front spoiler (centrally narrowed) the spoiler of choice ? Well, OK, it used to be . I have one ready to fit on Stan. It's been ready to fit for at least 10 years now......possibly longer.
