Hi folks,
been a good whilst since I've been on here. My aopologies as I totally lost interest in The Pest these past few months since I last posted.
I really need to get back into it & promise I will.. :D
Typically when the sun starts shining... :?: Yeh, it really has been shining here sometimes & the motorbike racing season starts I get distracted from The Pest Thats exactly what happened around Easter time.
Got a bit of decortaing to do in the house then I'll be right back at my wee rusty Imp.

Cheers.

Thanks for the encouragement guys. . & after seeing all the great photos of the national my enthusiasm for The Pest has been renewed..
To prove it I have been busy grinding, cutting & welding today with some photos of my own although not quite as cool as some of the Imps from the national.. my own progress towards that event sometime in the future I hope.

I firstly removed the lower part of the front panel one as it was rusty :o & not attached to the panel behind it. Think it should be welded to this at the bottom of the panel. It wasn't.. It is now. :D
ImageImage

Before I cut it out I made a template for the new panel. After this was made the panel that the front one should've been welded to was beaten into shape & fitted along with a piece that I made way back when I last worked on the Pest.. for the bottom of the inner arch.
ImageImage

After these were welded into place I returned to the lower front panel once again......
Image

That's where I am at the moment which will now allow me to continue with the outer front arch/wing... This is going to need a bit of fettling as it isn't the greatest of fits especially where it meets the sill & door.. This is what sickened me back in Jan/Feb so I hope it's ready to submit as I'm not going to admit defeat....

Cheers

How did you make the front lower panel section, Colin? I think I would try forming it around a steel tube but would be curious to know how you did it. :)

Fabulous work - as ever! 8)

Hi IM,
you are correct in the way you would do the front panel in the same way as I have done mine. I battered it around a pole I have in the garage. Sounds like you will nearing the bodywork stage for your Imp anytime now.????? I see you have been at it already?? Nice one.

Thanks Chris. Well done to you finishing Stella & picking up the trophies for all your hard work there. 8) Well deserved.

Never got a whole lot done today as it was my 8 year olds birthday party at the karting centre & I spent the afternoon there.. Good fun it was too. :D
Anyway by the time I got back from there & had something to eat I managed a few hours at The Pest..Buffed down my welds on the front panel repair & cut & trimmed the corner piece so I can fit the wing arch repair sometime in the week or ready for next weekend.
Image Image

Not 100% happy with how it sits but the best I could to do tonight. Will fettle it later & sure the filler that will be needed may sweeten it up someway.. when I get to that stage.

Cheers

It's not how far away it is Drew thats bothering me .. It's having the Pest finished in time for it that bothers me

Still, here is the progress so far no matter how slow I'm going it's still progress of a sort.
Finished of the inner arch at the bottoms front/rear so I can attach it solidly to the outer. Primed it with some Zinc 182 so now going to seam seal it inside & outside then another coat of primer.
Image

Whilst the paint was drying I set about cutting out the heater intake at the front so I can eventually fit the Fiat Cinquecento radiator I recently bought. I want to strengthen up the front suspension mounts in this area too so it is good that the heater box is now gone.
Image Image Image

The rhs top suspension mount was also welded up along it's seams & a plate welded into the H bracket to keep it out of the elements way like the LHS. This was done before the painting :D .

Thanks IM,
Before I weld on the outer wing I will seam seal where I have welded.. The new inner wing part & where the panels meet each other, inner wing to door post, door post to inner panel & this panel where it meets the inner wing. All potential areas that can rust if water ever gets into the door pillar area again..
Once the outer panel is fitted I will never get to this area again apart from using a long hose & some waxoyl of course.. It will get this aswell once final painting has been done.
Thats the plan anyhow..

Belt and braces, eh? It makes sense to seam seal as you go - as you describe - and then fill it with wax too for good measure. Thank you for the explanation. :D :D

Will do Big J.
How is your Stiletto coming along? You got it up & running with the Gordini box yet?

Today instead of thinking about fibreglass doors & the like I got on with the Pest.
Cutting out the top of the fornt suspension mount support so i can weld in a 1"1/4 box section piece & tie it into the chassis rails at each side. Took a bit longer than I thought it would.
Cut out the piece I needed to & trial fitted the box section before removing & painting with some Zinc 182 where I wouldn't be able to paint once it was welded in..

Image Image

Once in & happy welded it all in then primed with Zinc 182. :D The underside can be seen in the second photo.
Image Image

Also seam sealed the rhs inner wing & that has now had it's second coat of primer.... shouldnt rust now..

Re: PES 989J... "The Pest" Front suspension mount strengthening

Post by colimp66 » Mon Sep 05, 2011 9:05 pm

Two days in a row working on The Pest is unheard of lately but it has happened today with me working on the box for mounting the front radiator. I also seam sealed al lthe work I done yesterday on the strengthening of the front suspension mount.
After measuring it all up & do a couple of doodles on the box the radiator came in I was ready to start cutting & bending some metal.
The lower part was made up first with only needing two folds in it it was pretty straight forward but the height did concern me at first as I didn't want the radiator to be sitting on the edge of the suspension mount. I was thinking ahead of myself at this point & decided I would use the side plates that I haven't made yet to support the radiator using rubber exhaust mounts.
Image Image

The top panel to the box was a bit more of a challenge as it has a few more bends in it for attaching it to the body then to direct air to the raddiator & fold over the top so I can later mount the box to direct the hot air out through the redundant spare wheel well.
ImageImage Image
Tomorrow I will try & bend up the side plates that wil hold it all together & seal it so the air has to travel through tthe radiator.

Cheers

good work on the 1.1/4" box, exactly what i did, almost invisible once painted.

i also used a chiq rad and there were a couple of 8mm round pressings top and bottom, i put a piece of inner tube in the hole then used bolts or pegs to retain the rad. i put the rad in the gap immediately behind the panel, so i could get it lower and fit the opening in the front panel, then just drilled two holes in the floor to line up with the pressing on the rad , then put a long-ish bolt and nut to leave a protruding pin to rest the rad on, then i made a frame, but could be sheet steel to box in the sides and provide the top mounts

similar to Si Trickett's old car, you can just see the bolt on top edge :

I happened to have the box section lying around Brian but I did see on one of your posts that was the way you did it when fitting your front end. I have to thank you for mentioning that. Cheers.

My cinquecento radiator doesnt seem to have those holes top & bottom that you mentioned (repro guess) which is why I am going the exhaust mount route & use the 3 mounts that Fiat use for the electric fan to be bolted to.

Good to hear from you Big J.
Sure you will get stuck back in once your back over here & get used to the cold weather again...

Never managed to get into the garage at the weekend, well not to progress my Imp. Instead I was out playing on my motorbike that I have waited 8 weeks to get the V5 back from the DVLA so I could tax it.. It had to be done as the sun was out..
Anyway was in there tonight & finished the side panels for the radiator box so nearly ready for welding them in.. Thought I'd share the photos before it is welded up.

Hi Paul,
Nothing exciting I'm afraid as been busy with work(self employed) & not having any spare time to get on with it.
I have only welded in the top & bottom parts to the radiator ducting that I made up a whilst back.
I do have new fibreglass bonnet, engine lid & doors though for when I get back into it. Bonnet & engine lid are still in thew wrapping they arrived in stuck at the back of the shed.
Rebuilding an old race bike too so I can sell to fund all the suspension & running gear that I want to put into it.

If only I had a place like yours, that could make all the difference.
Gladdis is looking good.

It does make a difference yeah,
and I get the self employed thing- threads just don't show the bit where you had everything clamped up, welder in hand, mask on, and the phone went for a job that you know is going to be a few hours, do they.

will be watching for updates when you get the chance

Hello, I'm still here. :)
Not a huge amount done since I last reported on The Pest but I did have an hour on it the other night & welded in the panels I knocked up for the radiator box. No photos I'm afraid but will get some posted asap.
Some tidying of the welds & some primer will have it looking good.

Well thats Christams & New Year over with, hope everyone had a good one?/
I have managed to have a bit of time on The Pest.. finished of the front wing at last & got it back on the spit so I can continue the task of repairing the floor, inner arch, outer arch, lower rear wing & the rear of the floor where the suspension crossmember bolts to... Seems all way too familiar that..??? ? probably a lot more besdies that little lot...

Image Image

Once the wing was welded & buffed down I got it on the spit.. & was greeted with this...

Pretty much the same kind of state the lhs was in when I flipped that on its side. I think I can remember how to sort it out..

Cheers.

I'm really in awe of you guys who restore steel body work. 8)

Makes me feel really guilty that I prematurely scrapped HUE 135D (Polar White Deluxe) in 1976 and then BDU 501K (red and yellow Stiletto) in 1979....which made way for my first "rust-less" Clan Crusader FCV 273L (written off 2011 by the last owner in Ireland  ).

Both of my steel Imp variants were sound compared to the stuff you chaps restore.

Cheers Drew, hope you had a good one & all the best for the New year .

L-e-C.. shame on you scrapping those Imps .. To be honest it's a surprise my one wasn't scrapped some time ago.. I know I have had the urge more than once.. I'll keep battling on with it now.. I am envious of all that rust free fibreglass of a Clan.. 8)

Home from work last night & fired into the garage & cut out a bit of the floor & battered a fresh piece of metal into shape to replace it. Theres a few more of these to be shaped thats for sure but this is the first for now, more tonight I suspect.
