the 'TIKI MOBILE'
I thought it was about time I started a thread on the evolution of my 1967 super Imp.these are just some of its looks over the past 9 years.when I got it the rust was held togehter with bits of Imp but,now its solid steel as the last picture shows!
in 1999 it was dragged from a shed needing new sills and everything doing.
in 2003 it looked like this
in 2005
in 2006
in 2007
in 2008
and now.....
Big thanks to those who helped along the way,you know who you are!!

Re: the 'TIKI MOBILE'
I finally found some time to work on the car on monday,it has'nt moved since november time last year when I picked up a switch barrel from Mr Rooney having had a binnacle fire.(btw cheers Colin,it works perfectly) After spending a very long morning removing burnt wiring and rebuilding the electrics I needed to have some fun so,I revamped the steering wheel!

I must say I've been blown away by the feedback I've had about the Tiki Mobile and a huge thank you goes to everyone that voted for it,it was very unexpected to even be in the running. we were more than pleased to make to the show on 3 cylinders but,to leave with a trophy made our day,a big thanks to all of you that have played a part in keeping it on the road too.

Re: the 'TIKI MOBILE'
yesterday was a good day,After much waving of the Tiki stick, some intense incantations and help from a very good friend the Tiki mobile fired up for the first time in over a year and work began on returning it to the road.2009 was a differcult year with teathing problems after an engine rebuild early on then other commitments meaning the car took a back seat, despite running on 3 cylinders and only managing 5-6 outings all year the last one being a local show in August it had been a great year.the high point was being able to put faces to names and winning a trophy at the Imp nationals in Reading.from November 2009 until now its just sat on the drive.
the body has survived quite well despite the weather.
with the aid of a new battery, fresh petrol and a blow lamp to dry out the electrics it took us about 20 minutes to get it running,it was so good to hear it run again.it was'nt long before we found the answer to its poor performance,I'd had and inkling that it would be the valves and this is what we found.
I'm now determined to get it back on the road before the year is out.

Re: the 'TIKI MOBILE'
well finally the engine is all back together and despite some rust and a thick coat of neglect its running like a little demon.having freed off the brakes it moved for the first time in 2 years too ;D
being able to walk around it has really hit home how much work I still need to do and the brakes have stuck on again.but not to worry,it moves and all the electrics work too except foward 'skip' on the cd player, even the horn say AROOGARR! so its all good.
O/S in its old livery
N/S showing some of the freshly removed rust and some black primer I put on to arrest the spread of rust the winter before last, the thick coat of dirt evident on the screen was also over the whole car so Harrison got out the jet washer
rain then stop play so I did'nt get to find out if the new ACCUSPARK plugs that arrived the other day will make a difference or not but we did make it to the end of the drive and back a couple of times.

Re: the 'TIKI MOBILE'
After a protracted period of darkness on the subject,I've done it at last.today I started dismantling the brake system to get the 'TIKI-MOBILE' rolling again, the front wheels now turn freely. It seems determined to live and fired up this afternoon despite long term neglect.I'm going to spend a few hours on it tomorrow to see if I can free up the back end too.
I came close to letting it go earlier this year.its been standing since 2009 and I'd lost sight of how much fun it has been to own,bit by bit its coming back.

Re: the 'TIKI MOBILE'
the Tin worm has been busy under the bonnet! Not the fastest progress in the world but, with a spare 1 1/2hrs today I pulled out the tank and did some fettling. it turns out that it's the rear hubs that are stuck and it's not the hand brake so,game on there!! the fuel leak at the front was a perished hose and the tank is full of crud,I intend to get the tank steam cleaned then replace the fuel line,it's hose all the way so not exactly a big job.once its running right again it will be easier to move about and work on.next job,the rear hubs......

it was a comp duffnut now its just very duff....
I'm going to order in some nylock nuts'n'bolts too.
learning curve........
I spent a couple of hours on and under the Tiki-Mobile in the glory of Sunday afternoon, turns out that the doughnut failure was down to two bolts missing their nuts!
when I checked the other side 3 were well on their way to loose so,I'll be checking them more often in future.
it's now wearing nylocks nuts so hopefully it can't happen again.
I did a test fit for the cosmic spacers a couple of weeks back,I just need 2 extra extention bolts to put them on.
it looks like this at the moment, you can tell why the test centre put it down as Bronze!
I've started stripping off the old whitewalls, rewiring the lights and tidying the wheels too.

Re: the 'TIKI MOBILE'
I just came across this on the internet from the national in 2009 which was one off it's last outings.it's back to being used daily and we went to the Walton bridge breakfast club meet on Sunday and had a great time.
for now it looks like this..
it could do with buffing off and recoating in clear but,I'm waiting for spring and better weather
I haven't sorted the spacers yet because I'm still on the look out for 2 studs to complete a set
and it's now sporting enamel key chains from the children's favourite donut shop!

''OPERATION VROOM-VROOM'' IS A GO........
or replacing the tired and grubby old engine with freshly built shiny new one....
the TIKI MOBILE has been a bit hit and miss since I got it back on the road.the engine has been rather lifeless and rough which has meant we've only be able to do short local trips out, this prompted the decision to invest in a new. After a hectic year the time has come to get started on a major rebuild which I hope will put the car back into daily use.
Today I built this;
in readiness for this,that I'll be collecting on Wednesday;
and along with this,a new rad and an alternator......
it shouldn't be long before I'm back on the road again,I intend to spend next weekend putting it all together, fingers crossed that we have some dry and bright evenings this week so I can get started.

Re: the 'TIKI MOBILE'
I set to work this morning dismantling the Tiki Mobile to tidy up the engine bay and prep it for it's new engine, only the bell housing bolts to go before the old one comes out.
while it's in pieces I plan to check for rust ,sort any other problems I find and splash some paint around before fitting all the shiny newness in.
in other news I got the spacers I'd been looking for and I'm stoked with the new wider rear end.

Re: the 'TIKI MOBILE'
LOL,the tin worms have been at the battery tray, most of the rest is solid as a rock which is great news because the wax oil went on before I got the car back in 99,the top coat of rust will be coming off once the car is back on the road.
I've had a busy'ish day doing other things too but today has seen some more progress...........
I set up a field hospital in the garden and set to work
the rad, cowl and housing took a direct hit last time I blew a roaflex so that's been the first project off the car.
see,I splashed some paint about!! after reshaping the fan housing and cowl the test fit was better than I thought it would be.
and the trolley works a treat too

the old and the new are now one,I've cleaned and de-rusted the rear cross member, the next jobs are to arrest the pesky tin worm that's eating at the battery tray and fit the new front matrix to aid cooling.
after that I can start putting it all back together.

Re: the 'TIKI MOBILE'
so yesterday I got started on the car.....
I spent a couple of hours last night cleaning up the engine bay with Brillo pads, wire wool and Gunk
yesterday morning I spent an hour with a grinder, a sander and wet and dry on the engine cover before clear coating it
and another hour with Brillos and jiff cleaning the underside.
before......
hopefully I'll be able to get it all back together over the weekend

Re: the 'TIKI MOBILE'
a HUGE thank you to Malcolm Anderson for building my new engine,I'm SUPER STOKED.....
having fitted in the rebuild around work, family and the weather I'm rather pleased with the progress,I've been able to do the whole job myself with only a little help from a neighbour this morning to push the engine home.
there's still a shed load to do but,I got it all back together today, installed the new ignition and we took to the road for a test drive this evening, it all works a treat
unfortunately play was cut short when a speed bump ( a creation of the devil himself ) took out the exhaust!! .
the ride home was rather loud much to the amusement of my children sat in the back
tomorrow after work I'm going to take off the track springs and replace them with Monte's then rehang the silencer then I'll hit the road again.

Erin and I really enjoyed the show, getting there was enough but to get a trophy too made it extra special,it was good to catch up with old friends and make new ones too.
thank you to all of you that voted for the Tiki-Mobile,we were already halfway home when Erin took the message from Colin R that we had come in first,it made her squeal with excitement!!
thank you to;
Manic Malc for the new engine
Colin Rooney for his support and 'artwork'
and Baz too

I agree. But having spoken to Baz about that very subject over the National weekend, it would seem its not possible until next year. I believe there is a plan afoot.

Re: the 'TIKI MOBILE'
as it turned out we were very lucky to make it home after the national, just before Watford we picked up some chatter from the front n/s wheel bearing and then little bit of front end wobble.what I couldn't see when I got out to check was this...
two of the other three tyres were in a bad way too and had started to break up!!
It explains in part the hot rubber smell that we started getting on the M25,today after a trip to our local tyre fitters the TIKI-MOBILE is sitting on a complete new set.

Re: the 'TIKI MOBILE'
It's been an eventful time recently.....
when I got the new tyres the fitters used a gun which lead to one of the studs shearing,
after a trip to Epsom to see a certain Mr R,I returned with a new stud and it wasn't long before I was back on the road.
then I snapped the shifter.......
after a trip to Epsom to collect the new shifter and some restyling, the replacement was ready to fit
I'm blown away by the difference now that it has a 'ball' the previous one had clearly broken up long ago.
after less than 24hrs on the road this happened...
after a trip to Epsom.........
I'm back on the road again and eagerly awaiting the next reason to visit the Downs.
thanks again Colin

Re: the 'TIKI MOBILE'
I hate speed humps!
I live in an area where it's impossible to get home without going over speed humps (the Devil's own invention) or raised junctions, after numerous clouts to the Peco it finally gave up and needed rehanging after every trip out.
At the weekend I went to my local scrappy to get a stop gap silencer to keep the car on the road and came back with this........
it's an original CHERRY BOMB cut from a Ford Mustang and despite being a bit too long I couldn't be more pleased with it,for just £10 we are back on the road and it sits high enough not to make contact when traversing rogue speed humps!
I live in an area where it's impossible to get home without going over speed humps (the Devil's own invention) or raised junctions, after numerous clouts to the Peco it finally gave up and needed rehanging after every trip out.

Re: the 'TIKI MOBILE'
Well worth just sticking the exhaust up higher through the crossmember, my black one (with the shark mouth) has never clunked it's exhaust

I definitely need to do something like that if I decide to keep the Cherry Bomb,it looks like a giant saveloy sticking out the back!!Duk wrote:Well worth just sticking the exhaust up higher through the crossmember, my black one (with the shark mouth) has never clunked it's exhaust

Re: the 'TIKI MOBILE'
happy days, the Tiki Mobile has performed so well this past year since putting the new engine in,with several long motorway trips and a run to the coast it's still going strong, only a miner leak on the thermostat and two front brake cylinders fails (they were very old) have hampered play
in other news I finally recovered the tatty back seats.......

Frosty the Hill'man Tra-la-la-la-la-la-la........
the Tiki-Mobile laced with a frosting of -1.....
suddenly moving the heater to the fan housing to assist with ram air cooling doesn't seem so smart

Re: the 'TIKI MOBILE'
After this photo reminded me that I wasn't happy with the rear wheels because the stretched tyres made them look smaller than the fronts I ordered some 155/80s
I think the results speak for themselves and I'm pretty sure it handles better too
STOKED!!

Re: the 'TIKI MOBILE'
I've not been down to the shed for ages but yesterday gave me a free afternoon which resulted in this new curio for the car......
in other news,I've put Montes on the rear which has taken the Tiki-Mobile to a whole new level with some real OLd ScHooL rake.
