Special Saloon racing Imps. When did they first appear?

Post by mtnbikepoacher » Wed Jun 13, 2007 3:46 pm

I was doing some searching on the web, but decided the experts here would be able to provide better info.
When did they start to race the semi spaceframe Imps? Were they seen at hillclimbs before they were on the track?

Investigaing the possibility of using one in the US for historic events.

Thanks,
Al

My Davrian Imp saloon, which was the 8th Imp special saloon made by Davrian, was manufactured in March 1977.
Hope this helps.

My Stiletto hillclimbed and race at the same time, built in 1979.

Hi Al,
When I was with Alex Clacker racing in Special Saloons in the early '70s, (1970 - 1974) our Imp was a normal shell, although we did fabricate a tubular back beam.
At the end of '73/early '74, I think Jeff Ward was racing a space-framed Imp. Alex confirmed this yeasterday.
Hope this is of some use.
Les

Thanks for the replies.
I was hoping to find some late 60's cars. Unless there is a rules change, that is the only way I'd be able to race one if I got one.

Where did they start making other special saloon cars? Is there a book or some webside on the history of the races?

the rules in the 1960`s where really for club cars with wider wheels maybe glass fibre doors or the Group5 racing with homologated parts
The main contenders in Club racing where Bill McGovern in the Emery Imp
Ray Calcutt in the Fraser Imps and Roger Nathan in his own car
he also made a Twin cam engine
Fraser raced Group 5 cars in the British championship 1966 and 68
George Bevan race dhis cars in the Group 2 British championship and his driver Bill Mcgovern winning 3 times

Secial saloon Imps where until 1973 ish steel shells
John Homewood was probably the 1st Imp racer to have the fibreglass nose and rear wing panels form Rawlson
soon others went down this route
Jeff Wards space frame Imp was i think 1975 built by Dick Wallinger
Maguires 1st Imp was 1979 after he had built the Minis

John Homewood had the 1st Davrian floor pan Imp ( i think 1979/80)
There where Imps with space frame chassis but the "davrian" Imp body panels fitted 2 matbe 3 built i cant recall who made these
There where easily a dozen home made Space frame cars racing from 1980-85

Wallinger also built a later Imp with a wide looking body and he built 1 Lotus Esprit with ground effect tunnels Toleman suspension for Donington GT series

Tony Dickenson raced a Stilleto Imp circa 1974 with 1300 bda fitted and March uprights
this car was later bought by Gerorge Bevan for Rob Mason to drive with 2 litre BDG
