Good job its got a huge front radiator as IMP rear ones just dont work  and Jack Nights are extremely rare of course and a dark art, rarer than hens teeth even, this is a one off, of course the Jack Knight types are a little more numberous.
Wonder if the fact that Jackie Stewart changed gears with it makes it all the more desirable?
Nice to know its all been work on by craftsmen too, really needed to know that, its vital.

Notice how most things sold in the States are 'as is, where is'?

They don't like offering guarantees... :?

Used in an F2. Isn't that the province of Lotus Twinks', FVA's, BDA's etc. Would JK Imp box be sufficiently robust?

Off the top of my head and a quick glance at Doug Nye's Cooper tome.

There was no such thing as a Formula 2 Tyrell. Ken Tyrell ran what were in effect the works Cooper Formula 3 cars in the first year of the 1000cc. pushrod Formula 3; 1964. These cars used a BMC A Series based engine and a Jack Knight Imp based gearbox. Jackie Stewart dominated the season in one and this of course made his name. There was a planned BMC Formula 2 engine for the again new formula (1000cc, again but no other restriction) but nothing came of it, other Formula 2 cars, including the Lotus Stewart drove used a Hewland box. I suppose it is just possible that the prototype BMC engine was put in an F3 Cooper and Stewart tested it?

The Imp transaxle must have been a tempting base to produce racing gearboxes given the almost ubiquitous Hewland was based on a VW box, however it presumably lacked the strength to take much more power. It is a pity that the 1000cc F3 was for production pushrod engines, it was known as the "screamer" formula and a 998 Imp unit would have outscreamed the lot! Also the "free" 1000cc F2 didn't last long, a Lynton twin cam Imp could have been useful there but was too late on the scene.

The car and extra gearbox are now in Illinois. The new owner has a business with a long history of restoring British cars. He owned an Imp over twenty years ago and wanted to get another one.

I shared all contact information about club with new owner.

Hopefully he will be along soon to tell us what he really has and share his restoration plans.

Ken Tyrrell did do F2 after cleaning up in F3 with the Cooper-BMC, but the the chassis were Matras, and they used 1600FVA motive power with Hewland boxes. This was 1967, and the next year Ken provided Cosworth/Ford DFVs for Matra's new F1 chassis. The combination - still with JYS driving - very nearly won the World Championship in their first year. And in 1969 they did.
Ken built his own cars in 1970, but all Tyrrels were F1 cars. And none, of course, had Imp transaxles (thought they used other Jack Knight parts like steering racks)
