Hi Traco

Not sure who else has entered yet, but I will be there, trying to finish this year after 2 successive gravelly outings at Donington.

Hi,
I shall be in pottering round! maybe a bit faster I hope as I have just fitted some 32mm chokes in the hope of a dash more go but proof is in the pudding.

The entry list for Donington is now published on the HSCC website. There are 5 Imps entered along with lots of Lotus Cortinas and Minis and a class from the Guards race which is oversubscribed. Other Impers are Colin and Ian Gunton and Shaun Hazlewood. Colin will be running one of the new 5 bearing engines, perhaps Ian and Shaun will be as well. Looking forward to racing again.

Re: new 5 bearing engines

'New' 5 bearing engines - please explain? Do you mean 'new' to them but from the original 1960's batch or new/new? If they are new/new who's making them? On the subject of the original batch - do we have a definitive answer on how many 5 bearing engines were made and how many do we think are left? Also, what was/is the most popular size 12xx ?? Also was it ERA or Coventry Climax that made the first batch - I know that ultimately Ian Carter final machined/built many of them for racing. Rally guys don't know much about what you race guys do with our cars! Hope everyone has a good and safe weekend at Donington.

No these are brand new castings, commissioned by the Guntons, essentially copies of the original 5-bearing block but incorporating some features from the B1 blocks. There have been a couple of articles about them in the Imp Club magazine.

Colin, I was a member for the most of 20 years until the recession took a severe toll on my business and I had to cut out unnecessary expenditure.

I have one restored Works Imp, another Works car to restore and a Hillman Rallye that was built to Gp 3 (with an engine from Fraser) in AS Baird's (Robin Maunsell's family business). It was used on the Circuit in '68 and '69, in Galway and many more Irish and Northern Irish events and will be out again this year. I have the remains of a Works Avenger, not to mention a Sunbeam Rapier road rally car. I think it would be fair to say I have an interest in Rootes and Imps in particular.

I've tried to do my bit for competition Impers by working with former Club Competition Secretaries and others to sort out with the MSA the specification for Imps in rallying . Also, I have tried over many years to sort out the history of the Works Rally Team (with massive help from Richard Sozanski) - it might even get published one day.

Finally, when you live where I live there's not much that happens Imp Club wise and getting to annual events requires a spend of £ hundreds so not joining again is at least understandable.

I'm not complaining but I think your comment could have been a bit more respectful of my interest .

Donington Park, a blast from the past.
Believe it or not when I was up that way, not so long ago, theres was STILL a now faded IMP Club sticker on the rear of a road sign up there that told you this way to IMP 84 National! amazing.

It was on the rear of a road sign, there was a black stick on arrow with the word IMP and it was on a sign towards the top end of the circuit like a back lane entrance.
Ive got a photo of it somewhere in my pile of junk, dont know how long it will take to find it though.
I doubt you would notice it casually, its not in your face type of thing, you would have to be told to look out for it to see it, but I know they are doing lots of road work around there with the airport and circuit so how long it will remain now?
it was still there last year because it made me smile as I thought how no one had ever removed it :D

Ha, you see I aint been doing anything with the Imp stuff for years. My annual club memberships were running at over £200, so I decided I would join when I am a bit more involved. I have a few different makes of cars!

Results can be found on mst site http://dev.mstworld.tv/Results#

3 Imps started the race and 3 Imps finished the race (though I made heavy weather of it!).

Unfortunately, Colin and Ian Gunton weren't so lucky and did not start the race after problems in qualifying.

The rain held off, much to our surprise and the race was dry.

Onwards to Thruxton in 2 weeks now...

Cheers - Simon

Now Simon was really quick in the race, he gave them all a head start by just hanging around on the straight (electrical harnessing problem). Then he thought it was a bit easy, so a spin at the old hairpin let the field get away again. I think his view was track, grass, s***t Cortina, track, grass, track. It was very imp-ressive how he came back up through the field and passed the 1 ltr pole sitter Adrian Oliver for the class win. Looking good for the rest of the season!

For anyone who is interested in our races but cannot get to the circuit, there is now now a very good live timing feed from the HSCC website which includes commentary so almost as good as being there (especially if it is cold and/or wet!).

It's great having more than one car until they both break. It somewhat spoilt the Imp battle as I think there was only about 1 sec between Adrian, Gunton and Simon.

Some video from a Lotus Cortina at the back of the field

Shows a certain blue Imp being left at the start line.... but Cortina caught and passed on first lap, and then again next lap from a standing start, after excursion onto grass..(watch rear view camera around 4:00mins)..

To look silly as the Imps passed them up the hill!

I was told there were too many entries for their race, so they ran in the Saloon race. Most let the saloons past if there was a faster car behind, so I guess they must have been told to not hold anyone up.

There were yellow flags from the chicane to Redgate as the red Cortina had blown up and deposited water or oil along the straight, so I had to hold station until after Redgate.

The stall at the start probably caused some unneccesary panic/red mist but I calmed down after the spin - and the good news is that I have found somewhere to spin where I don't end up beached in gravel

As mentioned, these along with a TR4 and a 911 were a class from the Guards trophy race - they had to do their 40 minute race in 2 x 20 minute races with other grids; so effectively just an extra class in our race. The TR was the pick of the class...

Just had to rewatch it as I didn't notice the yellows ....that Cortina did seem to have a problem in the corners....

I do like watching these videos...better than most of the onboard F1 clips I reckon... waiting for someone else to post up some.
