Scandinavian Imps at Velodromloppet (video)

Post by knutspeed » Tue Jun 18, 2013 11:57 am

There were 4 of us at Velodromloppet this year. Velodromloppet is at the legendary Karlskoga/Gelleråsen track which has hosted races since the stone age. My dad met all his heroes there when they used to test F2/f3 cars around the neighbouring farms. Great tales of Jack Brabham et al...aaaanyway. There were 2 Danish Imps as well as our two in the sub 1300/pre 71 class.

Here's how race 1 went in the Bevan tribute car, this time on beefy Avon ACB10s with new rear springs etc...

Great Videos Gert! Was fun to meet up, hopefully we won't need to work so much on our cars next time and have time for a beer or two :)

I think my shorter Final Drive and hence better accel really pays off at this track. It certainly did when I raced Minis there, found 2 seconds instantly even though I had to let up on the main straight about halfway down (same with the Imp).

Must say I got a bit scared watching my car, it's soo close to tipping over even though it didn't feel like that from the inside. Better oil the tires a little...
And my start in race #2 was really unimpressive...total b*ll*cks!

Yes - great video and driving Gert :D
Finally you got the best of the champ (Flemming in the orange Imp) allthough he claims he had a minor technical problem in training

See Flemmings quick 500ccm conversion during training.

Klaus - will be there next time.

The traditional electrical failure - conrod through the starter motor!

Birger
It was sure fun to meet some other Imp-people, and you're right - next time less work, more bear :D
I'm looking at the race you have at Våler in August
Is it correct that it is Friday and Saturday? (not sunday)
Do you know anything about price, driving time etc.?

Last weekend in September we have a race at Knutstorp
If you come the bear is on me

Gert - August is at Rudskogen, Våler in September. If our cars are ok we're aiming at racing at Knutstorp with HMS. Doc will be at Goodwood during the last Våler race :(

Anyway, the races should be Saturday/Sunday, with optional free practice on Friday. I haven't raced at the new Rudskogen layout yet, just been there at a track day in a Clio Sport. Challenging circuit, but again very fast straights and slow (uphill) corners. Almost 40m elevation difference! The Våler track is good - high-speed, no mickey-mouse stuff - excellent for small capacity cars.

Rudskogen is closer for you as well, it's less than 1 hour from the Swedish border at Svinesund or Ørje, 45mins from the SHAG HQ, and about 20mins from my house. Våler is about 3-4 hours drive from the border if you're towing a trailer.

Would be very nice to see you there (and bring some more Danish 1300 cars as well, we'll have our own heat!)

Looks like you have great tracks for small engined cars. Any races for upto 1300cc GT's?

GTs and saloons run together in Scandinavia. But you have to have HTP documents, and run to FIA Period F or G specs. Agree with what Matt said, Vaaler is a super circuit, with no stop-go parts at all, really nice flow to it. Pity this year's finals are the same week-end as the Goodwood Revival meeting. But mid-September at Vaaler tends to be either cold or wet...or both. But the ambiance of the place is supeb. Highly recommended!

Cold and or wet can suit Imps quite well though it does also suit the Minis. Shame that cars have to be fia standard - we wouldn't get away with our HRSR spec Imps then!

Och, no problem with on-track cold and wet...it's the apres-track that is the worry! It is not unusual to see nighttime temperatures down to zero Centigrade, ie frost on the ground early in the morning. Woolly underwear is recommended ;o)
I agree on your comments about different countries running to different regulations. HTPs are de rigeur in Scandinavia, which can lead to all sorts of fun and games....se our earlier thread on
The Battle of the HTP!
