Hillman Rally Imp

On the Feb page of the calendar there is a great poster of a "factory conversion Rally Imp" 8) .
The poster gives nothing away except a couple of numbers on the door, a rally plate on the bonnet and lids for the driver/navigator :lol: .
Just out of interest what was a factory conversion?
Was it the complete car or just bolt on extras ?

Franka covers it pretty comprehensively, other than that it's a Rally and not a Rallye. A Rallye is a Simca.

The Rally Imp was really only a kit of parts to fit onto a standard Imp by a dealer or back at the competition dept. I was told a story which may or may not be true about the homologation of the car. They needed to build 500 cars for Group 3 (GT) homologation. They collected together about 250 cars, some of which had the correct mods and some were rather more standard. They were all fitted with an appropriate chassis plate. They were artistically aranged at the Stoke works with the "genuine" cars being more easily accessible. The gents from the FIA were invited to inspect them and then taken off for a slap up lunch with promises of the other 250 being available afterwards.

The cars were then descended upon by hordes of apprentices, the plates were all changed and the cars rearranged to look different. All very sneaky but everyone else was doing similar things. Rootes seem to have been particularly good at this sort of thing, it's interesting that the homologation applied to all Imp and Chamois variations on the market. :shock: To the best of my knowledge the cars were then put back to standard, the parts returned to store and then sold as and when. :?

Were there ever then any really genuine works built Rally Imps sold from that first batch? A friend at university claimed to have one but then I wasn't aware at the time just how rare such a thing was. :?

PH and co. cooked up a similar wheeze with Clan in the seventies. How do you homologate the Crusader when you haven't made 500 yet? Easy, jump from chassis number 200 to 701.... :?

They got rumbled though 8)
