And now for something a little different....

Postby SimonBenoy » Mon Sep 03, 2012 8:52 pm

I have quite probably bitten off more than I can handle, I have entered the Baby 360, a 2 hour endurance race at Brands Hatch on the GP circuit on 16th September (less than 2 weeks away). It is run by the 360 MRC (organisers of the 6 hour race at Snetterton that we entered with Pete Richards' Clan). This is not a relay race - it is a full 120 minutes with a mandatory fuel stop of 2 minutes in the same car.

I have started on the mods that I think are needed. I have fitted a larger fuel tank which I believe will give just over 60 minutes range. Andy Jones (Shrigley Eng) has rebuilt my 1120 and I hope to get a 4 speed box tomorrow from Dennis Allt (Transimp) to go with it and provide a relatively lazy, torquey motor. We can use list 1b tyres so I have a set of Yokos which are cheaper than my normal Dunlop crossplies. Now all I need to do is put it all together and sort out the refuelling equipment.

I don't know what other cars are entered (33 entries at the last count) but I suspect that they will all be newer, bigger and faster but my aim will be to finish and to run reliably for the 2 hours. There are 5 classes so there might be some other cars to race with.

So if you are free that day and in the area, you might want to come along to provide some moral support!

Team mechanics so far are Chris and the Ibbos, Mark & James.

I'd love to be there, Simon et al, but I have a prior engagement. 8) The very best of luck for the event, though.

OK - so that didn't work then!

Practice was good - qualified 18th of 30 and 2nd in class D (me, the Anglia and 3 x MX5s).

Race started well and was running nicely with the lead MX5 in class D with a gap behind me and ............

the crank broke.

Very disappointing - now I know how Pete feels after 360 problems.

Running on Yokos was nice - the car went where I wanted it to. Obviously not trying hard enough

I can honestly say I know how you feel. That's decided it I'll have to start planning for attempt 3 of the 360 then. We can do it.

Gem and i sat down with a fresh brew infront of the laptop late sunday afternoon, the TSL website refreshing every 30 seconds i was looking forward to seeing you beat some modern Jap cars. We both felt for you when we realised the car had failed. Chris tells me you took it on the chin, good for you.
My motto is "if you cant get out of your Imp smiling, then you shouldnt get in it" ! lets hope one of us can catch that OAP on sunday!

A lesser man might have given up after that many issues
Do me a deal? Employ me for 3 days and pay me for what I'm currently being paid for 5, then I'll have time to do everything!
