Should be results for Pirelli. Puts Geoff 5th. equal and Nigel 10th. in the championship. What is significant is how few competitors there are in Cat. 2 & 3 these days, most of the Escorts have gone off to play in the R.A.C. championship. Could be a good opportunity for a post '67 Imp to rack up some points? :?

It is back to the Borders for us next weekend for the Jim Clark Historic Rally (31st May/1st June). The Jim Clark is the only stage rally on the UK mainland using closed public roads. Famous for fast straight and yumps, the event involves 115 stage miles and two on Friday night in darkness. Keith Livesey assisted by his son Andrew is the Friesian Racing Crew Chief for the weekend and will be in the 'Sprinter with a cow on it' at Kelso and Duns service parks. Keith will be giving the normal Friesian Racing welcome to Imp enthusiasts but he won't be very communicative during the three short (20 minute) service visits that Henry and I will make. Sadly I was hoping for a big 50th anniversary Imp entry for this event but various things have prevented other crews from joining us - not least the total shortage of the specified Dunlop Tarmac rally tyre in 165/70R13 format. Dunlop haven't made any since last year and it is only because of Scott Clements' generosity that we were to make it by letting us have two tyres. We found two more with Mike Smith who sold his car to Geraint Thomas (who was out with us on the Pirelli). The MSA / BHRC will have to relax the rules or the Imp entrants at the two remaining tarmac rounds will be at risk.

If you are near the Scottish Borders next weekend come and watch this spectacular rally and say hello if you can get to Duns for the town centre stage (two runs) on Friday or to Kelso service on Saturday. PM or mail me if you need further details.

That seems a great shame Nigel. Given your inability to source the tyres would they not be prepared to allow you to substitute something else? Or is it the only tyre that would fit anyway? Of course back in my day a well worn set of 175/70/12 Goodyear Ultragrips was all i could manage for tarmac! :?

As I have managed to more or less put together a useable set of tyres I haven't formally requested a tyre waiver. The indications are that a waiver would be granted in favour of the Yokohama A048 175/60R13. This is slightly wider but with marginally smaller cicumference. It is also not that good in the wet so the Avon CR28 Sport might be requested as a wet weather alternative - it is 185/60R13. Either way the increased width will reduce further the turning circle with the Viva hub/disc conversion because of the increased track. A rally such as the Jim Clark requires a good selection of new and part worn not only because of puncture issues on the litle pot-holled lanes but also to give a 'wet' and 'dry ' set. In my case I will take 10 wheels/tyres in total so a switch to another tyre / size is a major issue.

This tyre situation is particularly unfortunate at a time that we were just beginning to get more Imps out in historic stage rallying.

Back now from a great weekend at the Jim Clark Historic Rally, where we took away full British Historic Rally Championship 2013 class points! Henry and I are now 6th in the British Historic Rally Championship (Geoff didn't do this event)! Thanks to our service crew, Keith and Andrew Livesey as well as Michael Bruce (Rootes dealer in the 60/70's ) who helped out on Friday night. Couple of pictures of us so far plus more to follow. Videos on my rally car's Facebook page 'Shammy Moo'. More videos to follow including in-car of us pulling 8500rpm in top on a narrow Berwickshire lane!

Lack of marshals and a rally car burnt out and damaged the road so some stages were cut i am sure Nigel will be compiling a report to post with al lthe details after he has recovered from a long weekend away the travelling to and fro mthe event was a fair distance plus unpacking the van and cleaning the car ready for re-prep.

The Jim Clark Rally is an amazing event – 115 miles on public roads of which 3 miles were through a town. Sadly the event operation had some problems.

Firstly the seeding was a disaster. With plenty of history out there that identifies our rallying results and with the smallest engine car in the historics we were seeded 17th out of 26! Immediately behind us was the Escort who ultimately came 6th, 6 other Escorts, a Porsche and 3 other quicker cars! The stage through Duns town was fine (apart from me starting the second run in second gear when my first is already very long!) Abbey St Bathans, a very technical and narrow stage of 16 miles was a bit of a nightmare. It was in the dark and within 4 miles we were caught by the first Escort. Finding a place to let him past was difficult enough, but with the added distraction of 6 lights blinding one through the mirror made it even more difficult. Often we had to come to a complete standstill to let a car pass us, which meant the 30 second gap to the next car was even shorter once we got back up to rally speed!. This happened about 4 or 5 times to the point that when we arrived at dense fog on the moor (might have been low cloud but we had to turn everything off except dipped headlight to see anything) I had definitely had enough of what is probably the best stage in the rally! Unfortunately I was by then driving in anticipation of getting caught rather than focussing on what was ahead and the information flow coming from Henry with the pace notes. Saturday was much better except that the event lost 3 stages (due to be run twice each) and one of the other stages we lost the second run through. So our 115 stage miles was probably more like 75 miles! This was due to lack of marshals, a car fire and accidents. We did OK though and came back having enjoyed the event with a finish and a BHRC class win. We learned a lot: how well the car jumped, how it dealt with deep water, how good the grip levels are with the almost extinct Dunlop D83J tarmac tyres. Probably one of the best events in the calendar but sadly we were the only Imp out.

However there is a long list of car jobs that need to be sorted before we go out again. It looks like my driving is catching up with the car’s development and we need to make some changes to it to find more pace.

Hi Nigel, great result, there is something to be said, championshipwise, for doing the event a lot of the others don't!

I sympathise over the seeding issue; we were seeded a minute in front of a Porsche on Eppynt... in a standard 1200 Lada! To be honest we hardly even saw him go past, just a blur! You sometimes get the impression that after the first 20 or so the organisers don't really care. You did get a mention about it on the HRCR website so maybe organisers will have a think about it in future.

Will you and Geoff be out on the next one (Severn Valley Stages?) ? I had thought of giving myself a birthday treat and going up for that one but with my family's ongoing serious health issues getting worse by the day I just cannot be away from home for more than a few hours at a time.

Henry and I are not doing the next round of the BHRC but there will be 3 Imps out at the Severn Valley Stages this weekend. Doing the BHRC round will be Geoff Taylor and Geraint Thomas and running in the Clubmans Championship will be Mike Barratt. This is the first year for a long time that I wont be helping in some way on the SVR :o .
Normally this event has great weather but this year looks like it may be a bit wet so dust won't be a problem :lol: .
I was a member of Midland Manor MC as soon as I had a car and this event was my introduction to rallying :o .
I've done various jobs over the many years from laying out the stages (normally about 3 days work), sector marshal, equipment officer, clock support car, stage finish crew etc etc :roll:
When I first started helping I think it was known as the Alcan stages but I suppose most rallying fans will remember it as the Kerridge Rally (Kerridge Computer Services was our longest sponsor) :shock:
Anyway I digress, good luck to every Imp crew this weekend and if anyone knows a company that would like to sponsor the event next year I'm sure the organisers would welcome them with open arms :D .

Well done Nigel on an excellent result on the JC despite the seeding problems. 8,500 rpm in top on those stages must have been exciting!! I am only sorry as I said in my email that we werent able to join you but next year possibly especially as it wont be my big birthday then......

We would be very pleased to see any Impers on the Severn Valley either en route or at service at the Royal Welsh Showground at Builth Wells on Saturday morning but we might be a bit busy as we have decided to do service for ourselves this time - seemed unreasonable to have the lads come down for a single service again. Please do stop by though, and make yourselves known.

Did anyone else see the MSA article in their quarterly mag about Historics running in front or behind moderns on loose surface stage events? They asked for comments which I have provided with the obvious slant. Running first on the road is the only way to gofor me with the stages in prime condition - to do it any other way would loose many Cat 1 crews IMO.

Geoff, you are absolutely right on Historics running first on gravel stages. I did a couple of BTRDA rounds back in the late '80's in my 1300 FWD Kadett when they used reverse seeding and running quite close to the front of the field resulted in a much easier time. The argument then was that whichever way round the field ran everyone was still running amongst their peers so there should be no baulking problems. I guess the more "monied" classes who would normally have been at the front started to get a taste of how they were leaving the stages for others started to complain... :x
However when it comes to Historics, particularly Cat 1 making conditions as easy as possible for the most vulnerable cars in the event should be obvious.

well done to Geoff and Steve, 1st in class and Gerint Thomas 2nd in class, on the Severn valley rally, its a shame Mike Smith is not having as much good fortune, having to retire with overheating problems, thats the second rally in a row, hopefully third time lucky Mike keep your chin up it will come good.

Spotted this clip on You Tube of us on the recent Severn Valley Rally in Wales. Nice to get an Imp selected in amongst some of the faster cars.



We are still planning to be out again on the Ulster Historic on 23/24 August based in the Enniskillen area on NI, which is a change from the usual Antrim base of the last couple of years.

Yes, very well done Mike. Not an easy event and you must be very pleased that the car made it through without a major issue - you must be one of the unluckiest guys around for the car letting you down on so many events recently.
Well done again and look forward to seeing you back in the Championship next year?

Pity you weren't there Geoff, second in Cat.1 could have been yours for the taking! I had been knocking the stages earlier on, certainly the "shakedown" stage where I marshalled on Thursday cut up very badly but where I was yesterday was in very good condition.

Well done Mike, you looked to be going very well when I saw you.
