Andrew Bryson and Jason Rowley have won the handicap prize in the Early Classic section (pre-66) of the Targa Wrest Point. They are a very experienced crew in this type of event, and it is good to see the result.

Cheers Russ I have just done that - am used to getting news from the mailing list that when I started the thread here it didn't occur to me that this time it was from one of our club's Tassie members.

It should be said also that this is a seriously competitive rally, basically a mini version of the Targa Tasmania. The head of the modern car field is comprised of machinery like the winning Lambo Gallardo Superleggera and Nissan GT-R's, in addition to the more common Porsches and Mitsubishi Evo's, etc.

As the report says it bodes well for the longer Targa Tasmania.

As regards the Targa Tasmania it was suggested by an Aussie Fiat Abarth owner who joined us, along with his car, at a race in Luxembourg a couple of years ago that I should take the Clan over and enter. He lived in Tasmania and was involved in the organisation and offered to collect us from the airport and put us up for the duration. By the end of the meeting I was offered the alternative of using his car instead as a cheaper alternative.

Don't get too excited re giant-killer, on the stage of the youtube vid he was just under 2 min behind the quickest Classic division car (1970 Ford Capri Perana for that stage), say 12min vs 10min - the times given are only in reference to the base time for the stage which I don't know.

Peter I think the youtube video had a comment that it is 998cc - that is the class limit, you might get 1040cc on the basis of an overbore, I would need to check the regs but it is common to allow 60-thou over. Don't know that a 5sp box would be allowed, and in the vid I wouldn't say I heard a 5th gear being selected although it is hard to hear with the throttle lifting etc and don't think regs would allow >4 gear ratios. I'd think they would use higher revs than that but again in the vid I agree it does sound under 8000.

For reference that stage was 23.32km or 14.5mi, I didn't note the time the Imp took but around 12 min so 120km/h / 75mph avg speed? The stage result says they cleaned it (against their handicap) while in outright terms had a penalty time of 2:56 which was 1:58 behind the fastest Ford Capri Perana (5.0 V8 South African car) which must have averaged 144km/h / 90mph - entirely possible given the open style of road. I wonder how much quicker the leading Lambo Superleggera in Modern class was!

To translate that, apart from a car's stage time there are two others that count, the base time for the stage, and the handicap time. So for this stage the Imp was 2:56 outside the base time (fastest was 0:58), but within the handicap time associated with the age and engine capacity. There are something like 7 age classes and 5 capacity classes.

They were also classified as 24th outright in the Classic division of 40 cars, which includes cars up to 1983, and any engine size. Outright winning cars were Porsche, Torana A9X, Porsche, Porsche, Mustang, with the non-Porsches being in the Modified spec rather than Limited Modified spec of the Porsches (& the Imp). From memory the extra freedoms allowed in MS over LMS wouldn't help an Imp much.
