Good luck, you're living the dream!

I wish i could be brave enough to just go for it...

Thanks for the advice on tracks guys, I've got a few decent lens setups for my Camera, so I should get to test it out!

Silverstone? More like SLITHERstone  Poured with rain all day. They gave me the wrong Lotus - an Exige where it should have been an Esprit with full submarine kit  Passed...YAY :D

About 110 down the Hangar Straight was where he asked me to back off! Aquaplaning was very much on the cards. Vale was my big bogey corner - difficult to judge the braking point with water sheen.

  Might have to at this rate. Even that needs a rebore :o No way I'll get to Donnington, Cadwell would be ideal but my home event has to be the big target.

Hi all. A return to the grid is a long way off at the moment (if ever, might not be able to afford the fuel!!!). The shell I am in the process of restoring is going to take time build into a racer. I shall take some pics of its present state and Colin Rooney has very kindly offered to post them on here. Cheers. Mike

Still only have aprox 25 road miles on new engine and box so very worried about turning up at donington with car it very un tried form ! Hope to get out today and go for at least 50 miles around Oxfordshire villages and just try and bed everything in ! Plan a rolling road run at btec in the week if they have space if not will just have to cross my fingers the engine won't lean out at high rpm and damage anything (valves) the carbs / car was set up at mini speed last year but since gone from 998 to 1040 with no change to carb set up !!!
Hope all ok with all other racers ?

Imp Race results from Donington:-
9th Steve Platts
12th Simon Benoy
16th David Heale
22nd James McKenzie
DNF Andy Jones (fastest lap in class)
DNF Colin Gunton.

Only one other in the same class was a Mini which DNF.

Both Andy and Colin were strong contenders last year so it's looking like a close-fought championship with luck.
Well done to the finishers.

It was a bit of a mad day today, Andy and Colin were both flying but their cars slowed half way through the race with problems, my dads car was never running quite as well as it should have been due to some attempts at development and ended up racing some rolling roadblocks (jags) while Steve Platts calmly drove to a very good class win. There are a lot of very quick imps now although the reliability is a bit lacking.

Yeah but it ran a lot better after my dad showed simon how to balance the carbs
It was a good day though, but they really need to sort donington out (spectator wise)

Again a very topsy turvy day today !!! As I did last year just pulled into the padock just as all race five cars started down for scrutineering ! Late again !!! It was all I could do to push the car of the trailer and get in the q as soon as I could ! By the time I got back to the padock it was time for new driver / circuit meeting , then with sadly very little checks we were out for practice ..... This did not last too long :-( after three short laps I went of at redgate corner maybe on my own oil and ended up in the gravel trap , imps are hardy little fellows and managed to dig it's wheels in and of we went again ! Half way round the lap the car filledwuth oil smoke ! Fearing the worst and very close to the pit entrance I hit the kill and costed in ! Apon inspection found loose cam cover and missing fixing bolts ??? We cleaned the mess up and got in the race although starting dead last ! Thankfully finished the race fourth in class but lacking power in a big way at the top end , drove most of the race in third gear as was unable to build the revs anywhere near my red line ! Not sure if I have a ignition / fuel / timing / gearing fault of a selection of the afor mentioned :-( rolling road my give the answers and as carbs still set for the old 998 I hope this is the fault !

Engine just sounded flat in third at top end , it seemed like ages going down the straights until the point of changing up to fourth ! And even then I was changing up at say 7500 rpm as it was not pulling up to and over my red Line that should be around 8500 / 9000 !!!! There may have been a misfire at top end but with exhaust noise and helmet was hard to say , gut feeling was that it sounded a bit flat / farty , was worried I had picked wrong gear ratios in new weedon box but he knew it was for racing , and on paper were quite similar to jk set up ! just worried my new set up 1040 R23 so far is slower than the 998 Fraser B (R21/22) !!! Advice greatfully accepted :-(

Simple answer to last part of your listing. In my experience your 1040/R23 combo will be slower than 998/R22 combination if you are using a lowered 3rd and top gearbox due to the additional gear changes necessary to keep the engine in the rev range.

Getting back to your problem the engine should really go once you are past 7000rpm. What is your ignition timing? 36 degrees at 4500 rpm I find to be best. Cam timing for the R23 should be 168 - 172 for max power and 180 for max torque. These figures are as suggested by Ian Carter and when I've used an R23 I've gone for the latter figure of 180.

If you are using Webers then the settings I use are as follows:- Chokes 30mm, Main Jets 115, Idle 45F9, Pump Jet 40, and Air Correcter 180. These will be fine for both 998 and 1040.

Pete Richards

p.s. If it was me I'd fit the R22 in the 1040.
Repair. Rebuild. Repeat.
