Bevan replica debut- video

Post by knutspeed » Sun Aug 15, 2010 2:55 pm

We finally got our Bevan-replica tested - but the shakedown was in a race :) Wrong gear ratios, the very same used when McGovern was clocked at 138mph at Silverstone. This due to the box we wanted to use not cooperating. Our local track is nothing like Silverstone :)

The ratios were useless to say the least, but this didn't matter as we were aiming at dialling out new-car problems, and give the engine some run-in. I did try a bit harder the last couple of laps, and laptime-wise it's looking very good considering. Now for some new ratios, some new springs and off to race again in a forthnight. Then I'll also rev it past 8000...

Pretty damn good considering the wrong ratios! Once you got past the green Mini you soon reeled in the Volvos! That Capri was quick though!

Thanks guys!

Yes, the Capri is a pukka Broadspeed RS3100 Replica, in Dave Matthews guise. Blindingly fast, and sounds almost as good as an Imp

Looking at the results, I had 2nd fastest laptime in the sub 1300cc saloons, so this bodes well since the ratios cost me a couple of seconds (at least). Apart from that we need to figure out how to get the temps up in those wide Avons. But we did a back to back test with Yoko 048rs, and we've decided to go with the Avons in the dry.

Fun, fun! And the car sounds so fantastic I didn't really mind toddling along for most of the race!

Wow, lovely car, looked quick as well, once you were past the Volvos (very nice use of the lapping car by the way) you were catching the cars in front of them very quickly. Once its all developed and modified it should be amazing.

That was great to watch .Thanks. Should be much quicker with the lower ratios. How long before the updated ratio comparison video ?? :D

If all goes to plan we'll be racing this imp - and maybe one more, pending a checkup - at the Classic & Sportscar Meeting at the fabolous Våler track in two weeks.

Excellent work. You`ll be flying when you get the ratios sorted! Nice one.

Jim,

This is a different Bevan replica built overseas. The other one is being built by the Bevan family, that's the one that won't be eligible to race.

I think it's the "other" Bevan replica that's not racing. The one that Jonathan Bevan's building.

The Men Of SHAG,on the other hand,I get the impression they'd race to the kettle for a coffee. :D

This has to be one of the best team names ever, right up there with Wafty Crank Racing and a couple of lads I knew who were nicknamed "The Grasscutters" as they never finished a race.

The Capri is the very same car that was tested in several of the UK magazines in late 2008. It was built, in the UK, as a replica of the Broadspeed Capri which was run in the BTCC in 1973, until its demise at the British GP meeting at Silverstone. This was the horrible crash between Dave Matthews in the Capri and and an Escort BDA as they came up to lap Gavin Booth's 1-litre Mini.
Many of you have probably seen the pictures of the Capri airborne, shedding parts, with Dave's arm and leg dangling from the cockpit as it cartwheels down the track.
The replica was bought by Mads Gjerdrum of Oslo In Norway, and made its racing debut here early last year. It had proven very quick, but sadly also not very reliable.
The car runs a Cosworth GAA in its "reconstructed" form, this is the four-cam,four-valve 3.4 litre V6, and it churns out some 440BHP, some 100BHP more than the Weslake pushrod V6 run in the original car.

He felt as if the engine was tightening, but it may well have been something else. All temps and pressures were fine, no smoke, etc, but it stopped. We did a compression test that left us unhappy, but this was done without holding the throttle open...and when we tried to start it it gave one big backfire, so it's quite possible that it's some basic electric fault. Let's hope so.

I think he's attacking Pumpkin this evening.

Naw, don't think that's the problem - I just ran way too high pressures, and we started with a very basic, straight setup.
