Clan turbo at Loton Park - Video!

Post by blown_imp » Thu Apr 08, 2010 5:51 am

Hi guys,

After chatting to Brian Gomm and Eric Morrey, I decided to take my girlfriend for a day at the races to watch Mr Morreys Clan battle it's wasy up Loton Park Hillclimb.

It was a fantastic day as I have never seen the Pilbeam / Gould type cars running before and they were ballistic! The Clan surpassed all expectations, whistling and popping it's way up the gradient with aplomb :P

So for those who have not seen it run, here is a little video of the intercontinental ballistic pocket rocket -

Cheers guys for the comments and for Blown_imp for posting the video sequence he took.

Most of the poping and banging is the revlimiter cutting in, That engine just keeps pulling upto the 8800 rev limiter too easily, i seem to change too late. Not bad for a standard imp 875 bottom end (with Block strengthening plate).

I only managed to do the one timed run in the afternoon as the headgasket has gone. On the first practice run the engine blew a litre of water into the catch tank during the run, but the temp stayed normal. On the second Practice i lost another litre of water and the temp rose from 80 degrees to over 100 deg over the line. On the first timed run the i lost a litre of water again, well i'm not sure as i actually lost the overflow bottle during the run   , but the temp went from 70 degress to 110+ over the line. I had set a personal best of 60.8 secs :D (previous PB was 61.9) and was winning the class by an embarrasing 12 secs  , so i decided to save the engine and not take my second timed run, where of course i'd have gone a lot quicker :P :P .

Quite an eventful easter as i only got my strengthened casing for the JK transaxle back on the thursday night, so i spent all easter rebuilding the 'box and modifying it for strength and refitting it. Really pleased that it worked perfectly, now the real test is how long it lasts  Also the trailer decided to shred a tyre on the way up and i forgot the spare, so i had to limp home with a Reliant 4 wheeler towing a 3 wheeler trailer.

All good fun, but i'm glad my next event isn't until the Mayday holiday. i'm actually fed up of working on cars at the moment.

Paul, don't worry, i took the engine back out ready to change the headgasket this afternoon so i'm back in the overalls again.

Simon - i'm making progress on the 998, hopefully the wills rings will put an end to the headgasket problems.

Brian - Yep the head gasket was on its way out on the test day, it was blowing water out then. You get about 5 runs once it starts to blow water out. Basically ran out of time because i was sorting out the gearbox.

Andy - The old Scimitar is still dragging the car round the country, 38 years old, 250,000+ miles and no careful owners. I actually had to weld the chassis for the MOT this year, i only did that 16 years before.
