HSCC / HRSR 2010 A GOLDEN IMP YEAR OF RACING ?

Post by apeximp » Sat Jan 09, 2010 5:20 pm

Happy new year to all. Thought i would try and get the ball rolling with a thread about this years hscc pre 1966 race series that has in the past been so good for our cars ! At very long last it looks like i will be out this year in march at silverstone to see how i get on in the world off imp racing. The stories going sound suggest there could be as much as 10 imps out on the track this year making it possibly a truly golden year of imp racing. All the best guys. And drivers start your engines lol ..........

Going to try to get to as many meetings as I can this year. With 10 Imps on the grid even the Lotus Cortinas will be quaking with fear!

It should be a really good season, its always hard to know how many cars will come out until the first race of the season however its looking pretty certain there will be more imps than any other make of car out there. Should make class E close. 8)

Calendar has now been finalised with a couple of changes - Snetterton has moved to 5-6 June and the saloons don't get to race at Castle Combe this year - they are having 60th celebrations and have invited the Masters saloons only. A real pity - Combe is a great circuit and a lot of fun in an Imp.

None

We are racing in 5 weeks, thank goodness.

And no, before you ask! But there could be 6 or 7. I expect Andy, Vince, Martin, probably Shaun and Colin, maybe Graham and Ian. And you and me. Maybe Adrian. I don't think Alan will be ready. Don't know about Mike H or Steve P. There are others out there who could come and play.

There are 8 Imps in a total entry of 31 varied cars for the first race at Silverstone on 28th March.

Hope to see lots of Impers there!

What an exciting race at Silverstone today! Battles throughout:-
HSCC 24.jpg
HSCC 17.jpg
A well deserved class win for Simon Benoy after a race long scrap.
HSCC 13.jpg
Classic 'David and Goliath' stuff, with similar lap times!
HSCC 8.jpg
And an unfortunate early bath.

Nevertheless, 8 Imps started, with 3 plus a Clan in the paddock. Well done, especially to Mr Benoy for the rapid engine swap before the race!

Suffice to say that Simon's well-deserved win came after an engine swap between qualifying and the race! This season looks like it's going to be very entertaining, the class lead swapped a few times from Simon to Andy and back again.

Well done to all the other Impers who took part as well, especially the rookies, 8 Imps racing and 5 (not three) in the paddock area plus the Clan and lots of Impers too! Even the weather, although cold, was pretty good.

I'm uploading some pics and a vid as I type, I'll put them up here later.

A thoroughly enjoyable day topped off by showing a Honda CRX driver that 930cc of Imp power cannot be shaken off when it gets twisty

well guys what a day eh ? Think its called in at the deep end ! My biggest worrie was holding up the class E imp boys today. Well with Colin Roony and his Dad and Ron Aspinwals help and advice we got thro practice in one piece and started the race last but one. Made a very bad start totaly my fault not looking in the right direction for the red lights was jumped and was dead last into copse ! After the 1st lap was able to re take the place and make inroads to the next placed car that ended up being a V8 mustang. And hard as i tried i passed him three times but could not make it stick ! My main goal was to finnish with car and driver in one piece and i reached that goal. My other objective was not to make a fool of me the club and the othes imp racers i was out with today. I hope they feel i "i kept our end up" ? I found 4 secs from morning practice to my fastest race lap so it seems there maybe more to come from both the car and driver ? (both need to go on a diet) Thanks guys for making me feel so welcome. Jim :D

Jim, we were cheering you on, be proud! If there'd been a little moisture on the track you'd have run rings round the 'Stang.

Great day! Great to see so many Imps out on track and so many familiar faces in the paddock.

Glad that Simon's (and assorted friends and family's) hard work changing the 'ventilated' engine were rewarded - although Andy Jones didn't make that easy (great scrap!).

Well as far as my day went, we got to the track ok, got the car ready for practice. All normal, I was in the pit lane during practice and it seemed like my dads car was doing pretty well, then I noticed he was no longer circulating and I knew he hadn't pitted and there was a yellow flag being waved so I guessed something was up and headed back to the paddock.

The car got towed back to reveal a rather serious crankcase breathing issue. At this point we had the option of packing up and going home, but on the basis that it costs quite a lot to enter a race we did a little bit of looking at watches and calculating times and decided it was at least worth a shot at getting the 'spare' engine in (which rather fortunately is a rather decent long stroke from the hill climbing and sprint days) so my dad headed home in the tow car to pick the engine up along with some supplies (oil, water, lots and lots of rags ect) while myself, Mark Ibbo and a handful of other impers started to remove the knacked engine. We got that done pretty quickly (if slightly messily) and removed the carbs, clutch and flywheel and all the ancillaries to go on the 1120. Then gave them a bit of a clean as a rather over enthusiastic new marshal had sprayed the engine bay with an extinguisher, making a right mess of it.

A couple of hours passed with quite a lot of looking at watches and deciding it was less and less likely to be possible (pessimists  ) when my dad got back, possibly around 1.25ish? Either way it gave us just under 2 hours till the race, we (myself, my dad, Mark, his son James, Eric Morrey and a supporting cast of Si Creasey various other impers that chipped in to get it done) and set about fitting it and everything really went quite slickly With a good half hour left before the race we had the engine running and were making sure it was ok with no leaks. We then set about the second problem which was the extra ballast that we needed as the car had to be 30kg heavier with the larger engine in so we filled the fuel tank to the brim, bolted in a flywheel to the passenger foot well and since we were not allowed to weigh it before the race, hoped it was up to weight.

Anyway time for the race we head up to the stands and watch, hoping he will at least take it fairly easy on the engine, well that probably didn't happen but with 20 mins of tight racing with Andy he just about came out on top and everything held together. Then as my dad got back to the paddock we found out the car weighed 1 over what was required so there was no problem there. It made everything seem very worthwile.

I have to commend Andy on some great racing, he was very unlucky to come second in class and this promises to be a very very tight season. There was action all the way down the field and for so many imps to be out racing is just amazing, also well done to Jim for getting through his first race without any problems and giving the mustang a real going over. Also well done to Vince for a strong performance finishing midfield.

Thanks to everyone who chipped in and helped out, I hope I haven't forgotten anyone who helped, it really is a great club. This could be the basis for an impressions article. Certainly lots of pictures of it.

I was a bit worried about Simon's car, as every lap, there seemed to be more blue smoke coming out the back - you can just about see it in this photo - being dragged up the rear of the car.
