Spaceframe Imps
Given that there has been historical and ongoing interest in spaceframe imps,I thought I'd start a thread about them.
These pics are from Les998 and are of his old and new Stilettos and although Les wasn't sure if they'd be any use,for somebody like myself with an unhealthy interest in these wee hybrids,I absolutely love them.
Many thanks Les.
Will anyone with pics of spaceframes or semi spaceframes please add their pics,I'd love to see them.
John

Re: Spaceframe Imps
Hi I have always been interested and have raced with a team that used a proper spaceframed mini i would like to ad pics i can email some pics of the stuff we have done and then maybe you could post them for me.
My big love is the imp shape, im in the prosses of either purchasing one or making a new one.
The problem with the old stuff is its very dated and usually rotten and if you went out into todays motorsport you would struggle. Thats without thinking about the safety side as well. Thats a brave man looking at restoring that car. But good luck.
As i said by the end of the weekend i will have more than likely chosen whether to buy one or make a fresh one. However if i make one i am hoping to get either 1 or 3 more individuals invloved with a keen interest in spaceframing the imp which will be based on a brand new state of the art chassis with 2 motorcycle engines. But more about that later.
From the pics it looks like some new panles have been purchased, For future reference if needed, i was wondering where you got these. I believe keith in Ireland has some mcquire moulds. I was wondering if these are the same.
If i Build a fresh car im looking to borrow some moulds and make some either from very light fibreglass or out of carbon fibre/kevlar. Alot of the earlier stuff was very heavy. Theres probaly 500 quids worth of material to do one in carbon /kevlar so they would be strong and light .
keep the spaceframe alive, theres not many left, they seem to be changing hands for a rolling shell for anything from £200 to £2000 dependent on condition and more if they are complete. But i certianly want to get one out for imp followers as well as get one northern based back into competition.
hopefully i we will sooon.
good luck mike

Re: Spaceframe Imps
Wow,thanks Col,great pics.
On a spaceframe like the Mason or that, how do the panels attatch?I'd imagine the wings are removeable with dzus fasteners or similar, but what about the roof?Would it be bonded to a firewall or something?

Re: Spaceframe Imps
What a great tread this is,it is worth while to point out that there really is some interest in imps and racing etc,we should put all these cars to gether have an open day exchange ideas, get featured in some credible magazine,i am going to set up a deal with imp component suppliers, and for people that want parts these will be available at cheaper rates,i will buy big and buy right and pass on to any (genuine) imp racing car owner, will only be available to people that own a racing imp

Re: Spaceframe Imps
Keith there is lots of intrest in special saloons be it imps or mini's and part of the reason is to buy them and stick a bike engine in ,but as i said in another thread i love the sound of the imp on full chat and would rather see people do as megapin is doing and build a new chassis ,that way these special saloons will survive and with a bit of luck we may get to hold historic special saloon car races someday

Re: Spaceframe Imps
Id like to get involved with what col has suggetsed so ive just emailed. There is also a northern based series that races currectly at Oulton park and anglsey which has big grids and its a good crack.
i think colin the problem will be there are lots of old stuff out there which wont be upto spec and will never be rebuilt within the forseable future , then theres the point of suppliers wanting daft money for stuff. You know my view on that. Lets see what happens though
