Dang,Col

On a personal note,is there anybody out there with pics of the Citroen engined spaceframe that Ray Payne built?
I'd be fascinated to see how it was done.

I thought that was built by Ray cars and loosly based on a widened version of their formula ford car chassis with same body as the Darrian mould. I didnt know Ray Payne built it unless the two Rays are a coincidence. Car was smashed by Gary some years ago and he told me he didnt think the chassis was repairable.

Re: Spaceframe Imps

Post by big J »

Can anyone identify any of the unknown cars or provide any background detail to any of the pics ?

I think the blue and red Stilettos above are Pat Mannion and Brian Cutting as shown in the vid Col posted up?

It's strange just how little is recorded about these type of cars, either inprint or photographically, considering how many modified racing Imps there were.I can remember programs fromIngliston that Listed, iirc, around 30-40 Imps out at a meeting.
Obviously, not all would have been spaceframes, but a lot were highly modified and would have fallen into the semi-spaceframe category, which this would encompass.A semi's nearly as good as the real thing.

We need a Clive Brown to provide some background and colour.Anybody out there know Clive and could maybe give his rocking chair a kick? :)
Les,Finlay,Col,Leo,Gerry and Eric have given us great insight into their and others cars, but there surely must be more info/background/anecdotes about it all before it all just fades below the horizon?

A book about maguire imps is almost complete,it will be in print in the not to distant future,i dont believe that any one should write about any thing that they have near owned, there are 7 or 8 genuine maguire imps/stilettos left in the uk and ireland, there is currently only three log booked by the rac etc,i can confirm that there is three in ireland that i know off and 4 that are definately in the uk and scotland,2 in scotland,1 in kent, and one in the heart of england, ive followed these cars for a very many years i dont know every thing but i know alot,3 cars have went to japan in the last 7-8 years

Today at work we had one of those mobile dent guys in, Started tlking about various things, he asked why an Alfa, then I mentioned Imps and Clans, oh I know someone who shares that view he said.

Who's that? Tony Cutting , apparently still runs a car sales in Dorset, so when I get the time I'll see if I can track him down and see if he's interested in sharing any memories

Hi John,

I agree with Keith, you have done a fantastic job, with this thread, getting all these pictures, video's and all the info on the cars, I'm sure a lot of Imp owners have been enjoying all of this. 8)

All you have to do now is to get all the cars that are still about on to a Grid !!!!!! Now wouldn't that be a sight !!!! :)

Harry Simpson is on this Forum, I thought he would have had something on about his Spaceframe cars by now !!!!!
We will just have to wait and see if Harry is going to put up anything !!!!

I've been emailing Kevan Mclurg to get his input,he seems to know a lot about this era. Here is a summary of his comments and queries-
Page3
-Erling Jensens Maguire Imp was Brian Cuttings 2nd Maguire Stiletto. His first went to Pat Mannion, this car later written off?The 2nd car sold to Phil Lomas of Mobile Windscreens, then to Erling?

Yellow/blue Stiletto-Phil Lomas or Brian Cutting driving?

Mallory Park, white Stiletto and A40,Stiletto is David Enderby in a Mason car, circa 78.He later had a Maguire Imp then a Stiletto, then Karmann Ghia.
Rob Knox black and yellow car is a Ray build with Mike Iwas at Brands.
Page4
-The blue Davrian post on Tim Duffee;the Bob Jarvis panels are the Ray panels.
Spaceframe Mason Stiletto-writer can recall 10 or so semi-spaceframe cars,no further info on a spaceframe?
Donington-white Maguire Imp is Sue Davis 850 class(?)
Page 5
George Coghill Maguire Imp-first car sold by writers father, later had it in 1980,bought from Mike Hannon who hillclimbed it,he had a bad leg and fitted a hand clutch on the gear lever.(Hannon)
Writers information would indicate that the AC3000 body was fitted toAndy Bartons March 802Hart,raced at Donington GT.
Page8
John Homewoods Davrian Imp was the 1st built, sold to Simon Sabel then Terry Mitchell, crashed at Lydden backwards over the start line.
Forth Electrical Imp is Jim McGaughey.
White Stiletto and green Imp-Alan Humberstone 1300bda and John Schneider respectively, circa 77,78.
Page 9
Jim McGaughey is driving the Wallinger Imp,on page 11 it's Dick driving his car.Later owned by John Goulder, raced in Donington GT.
Page 10
Laser Transport Stiletto is Ernie Woods,Rob Mason driving the same car on page7
Thruxton, pale green Maguire Stiletto is Barry Reece, later to suffer from chronic injury from which he would never properly recover, passed away shortly after.(I guess that the vids I posted before were some kind of memorial event.)
Donington photos;white blue Stiletto is Mike Laws home built car circa 80.
Black Davrian no73 is Steve Holland at Lydden,850 class.
White Stiletto no83 is Mike Luck.
Donington GT pic of the blue Stiletto with the big wing is Dave Smith 1300bda
