Re: A Californian drying out in South Africa

I really think you are far too obsessed with oil drops. For goodness sake, it's a 1960s car using 1960s tolerances and standards. They leak. They ALL leak. You'd need the proper seal and related machining to stop it, and even then it might not. Those 2 drops would be considered a full cure in my gar...

Re: A Californian drying out in South Africa

Loose and or poorly fitting pulleys has been a bit of a recurring theme locally, with shafts ruined, pulleys ruined and reputations on the line. Again there are variations of fit, diameter, condition etc best go for alloy ones : at least they are new and on size !

Re: A Californian drying out in South Africa

Yep. I will let you know which code later on. Its an early Beetle. I take a small amount off the inside of each side, but then shape a small piece of metal to weld inside. Thick washers of the correct size will do to get the basic shape. Plus you need the pigs tail curly retaining pins too, and perh...

All new Aston Martins have mercedes engines ! Britain doesn't value engineers, accountants rule the roost ! Other than motorsports, maybe. And you need to consider the costs involved with designing and manufacturing a brand new engine that will only be sold in extremely small numbers. Aston Martin ...

Re: A Californian drying out in South Africa

I would say £40 was a bargain, to be honest ! :o I think you'll find that most engines tend to stop in the same place ? Therefore, it follows that the starter will pick up at the same section too. A consequence of the firing order, perhaps. 1 - 3 - 4 - 2.

South Africa is still a man's country : no poofy safety requirements. You learn by your mistakes and cotton wool wrapping is banned. Just like it was here in the good old days when we didn't have "nanny" stopping us from finding out ourselves. :)

OK, understood. Better not buy cheap Chinese spring washers then, as they probably wouldn't have the necessary tension in-built. I think I'd rely more on Loctite these days.

Re: A Californian drying out in South Africa

this was for two reasons, the flat washer will not damage the new paint on the sump. Can't see the second reason !? Doesn't a flat washer underneath a spring washer negate the sharp edges reason for being ? ie cutting in to nut and surface of the item clamped to prevent it coming undone. Just think...
