Re: A Californian drying out in South Africa

Yes, Roy. I'm told that there are 2 or 3 different styles. Even the casings cannot be inter mixed. This makes it awkward for people repairing more than one pump en-mass as its better to keep each shell with its partner and shaft/impeller.

This is true : I once saw a bloke hammering in a wheel bearing in a field at National one year. And I don't mean gently either. And he once worked on aircraft too, apparently. :o

Some water spigots are steel. On heated manifolds anyway. The odd drilling plug maybe. Cant remember if the Imp has core plugs :? Oh yes, clutch end ? Heater control ? That's about it.

I agree with you on some points Peter. But certainly not plastic impellers. Ford did that, and they're shite. And fail quite regularly. Stainless shafts - fine. Plastic bodies ? Nah. The alloy ones we have aren't that bad, if people use proper anti-freeze with inhibitor in it. We've had a local memb...

Well yes, of course, but Rootes were assembling brand new shafts in brand new casings with brand new bearings and brand new seals. Its not the same, is it ? I've been told by a number of Impers that dry running is advisable, and have recently fallen foul of not following this procedure when fitting ...

Re: A Californian drying out in South Africa

JB weld would have been even better ? Recently there has been some discussion about water pumps and the need to bed the graffite seals in by running the pump dry for a minute or two, otherwise they may leak for a few hundred miles even. Have you experienced this ?

Today I removed the electric windscreen washer bottle and cleaned it out. It was rather dirty inside and coated with a grotty brown film, which I've put down to the use of berry "flavoured" screen wash tablets. I'll stick to conventional stuff for the winter months. Rinsed out, scrubbed as best I co...

Today I finally got around to fitting an electric bonnet release. I'd had a half hearted attempt before, but it didn't work. It remains to be seen if he moves his Cally on, now the deal has finally been done, but good luck to the both of you. I'm sure it will get some decent road time, something lacking as far as said Cally is concerned. Can't wait to see it at a Sussex club meeting somewhen soon.

No, you're misreading what I said. Dowty washers have been around for ages is what I'm saying. Soft copper or aluminium would have been used as standard. Dowty were developed for hydraulics if I remember correctly.

Yeah, but that was an extreme situation. On the bench, you have the weight of the floats acting on the valve and set it accordingly. Holding it up when upside down is a bit hit and miss. And I trust you'd put your fag out before commencing

Me neither. I'm intrigued to know how you measure the float level just by removing the float bowl when the carbs are still fitted to the car ! :o I'd suggest that its not possible to get an accurate measurement ! For goodness sake. Take them off and do it upside down.

That looks like an Iridium jobbie. Yes, some manufacturers quote a particular plug covering multiple uses. In my opinion that can't be considered correct, otherwise all other manufacturers wouldn't bother developing and testing alternative plugs. One size does not fit all.
