Re: Spaceframe Imps

Yes, that's me - Paul Batey Stiletto 998. Here's one from the archive, a lot younger and lighter then!

Re: Spaceframe Imps

I can confirm the picture is of Brian Innes Mason Stiletto and was taken in 1985 or maybe 1986. I was there at the same time competing in my own spaceframe Stiletto, which was the car Brian owned before buying the Mason Stiletto. My spaceframe was a Maguire copy built in the North East of Scotland b...

Re: Nick Humphrey?

I've been trying to track him down too. I sold him my spaceframe stiletto back in 1988 and am interested to find out what happened to it. The only information I could find was through the Alfa racing forum as Nick went on to build and race Alfa's after the Imps, but it was dated 2011 with. Othing af...

Re: Spaceframe Imps

Mike, same dilemma I had with the Rawlson spaceframe - went with the ZX10R as the most cost efficient way of getting it back on the hills. Presently awaiting new body shell from Chris at Fiberclass.
See you there!

Re: Rawlson spaceframe

Thanks Jon, interesting advice. I'll pass it on to my experienced welders who are coming in to help and advise me do a 'proper job' - my limited welding experience enables me to add unsightly blobs and call them 'tacks'! They both have MIG/TIG access and experience, one is in fact a racing car fabri...

Re: Rawlson spaceframe

Trial fitted the engine last night and clamped up the rear wishbones to see how it all sits in the spaceframe. The engine frame in the pic is only going to be used as a template for a new frame in case you were wondering. Looks like the floor is going to need shortening and the engine installed as f...

Re: Rawlson spaceframe

The basic components of the front frame have been tacked together. Now I need my brother-in-law from Guernsey (Frankie Morgan) to come over and show me how to weld it together properly. Then I can put in the structural strengthening and load spreading diagonals to complete the front. Front and rear ...

Re: Rawlson spaceframe

It's been a while so here's an update on what I've been doing with this. I've been acquiring the necessary hubs, uprights, wishbones, rack and wheels needed to set up the front and the design of the new frame for the suspension mounting points has been reworked and refined as the new parts arrived a...

Re: Rawlson spaceframe

Thanks Pete, I'm in Marlow Buckinghamshire. Where are you then? Col, I'm a novice but adequate MIG welder but haven't progressed to TIG - only have a nice new MIG machine to play with too. My brother-in-law is a certified welder in the Channel Islands so maybe I need to pay for a short holiday for h...

Re: Rawlson spaceframe

The original frame has brazed joints but I'm not using any of the original thin walled tubes at the front. I'm attaching my front frame to the more substantial roll cage tubing and the 2" x1" 16swg floor box section. I would have thought MIG welding clean new box tubing would be fine. Using an exter...

Re: Rawlson spaceframe

Been researching and designing a replacement front end for the past few weeks. I've acquired front and rear top and bottom suspension arms, steel box section and been practicing my welding. This is what I will graft to the front in place of the old Imp set up, loosley based on a Westfield/Caterham/T...

Re: Spaceframe Imps

Anyone have any leads on Maguire moulds for new glass panels? I know Chris at Fibreclass has moulds of Colin's Rawlson but he hasn't yet replied to my email. Keith in Northern Ireland may have access to Maguire moulds too, but I don't have any details (costs, timing, etc). I would prefer to convert ...

Re: Rawlson spaceframe

On a more serious note, there is still some residual damage from the off at Shelsley Walsh suffered by Gerry Richards back in 2001. There are bent tubes, a misaligned front shock top mount and a couple of cracks in the rack mounting bracket. image.jpg image.jpg image.jpg image.jpg Unfortunately this...

Power plant(s) have arrived!

2x Kawasaki ZX10R engines, one ready to fit complete with subframe to mount Ralt suspension with inboard shocks, and one a complete spare, new and unrun.

Never even seen a bike engine up close, now where's that Haynes manual..........

The MSA logbook has the date of manufacture down as 1978, though of course that may just be someone's best guess.

Yes, I have the body but it is quite tatty now and very heavy. It will be replaced with new, lighter panels eventually.

Rawlson spaceframe

Not one for the purists this, as I'm intending converting a Rawlson spaceframe Imp into a bike-engined Stiletto. Those of a nervous disposition need read no further! We'll after a sweltering round trip to Bournemouth and sitting in 3 hours of traffic I finally got the bits home.......and of course m...

Re: Spaceframe Imps

Got any pics?

I'm trying to trace my old spaceframe which I (regrettably!) sold in 1987. It's actually the blue car pictured on page 9 of this thread posted by Big J as "Ingliston, driver unknown".

I'm in the process of digging out all my old photos to scan and upload to tell the story.
