I hope I'm not teaching Granny, etc, but I always fit the bolts the wrong way round - the head next to the spider. I think couplings break because a bolt comes loose and then breaks. If a bolt comes loose, it's putting the load on the thinnest part of the bolt. On both occasions I've broken a doughn...

I was in Hobbycraft the other day and they do A4 sheets of dense foam about 1.5 mm thick called Fab Foam. It comes in a variety of colours. It's easily cut with scissors and I've made a couple of gaskets with it, like the one at the bottom of the steering column outer in black. Wouldn't be too diffi...

Yes, I have a copy. 28 pages in the MSA blue jacket with every page stamped with the RAC authentication perforations.
