Re: Dream Spaceframe build

Spaceframe Imp would surely be in the sports libre class. Clan would be the same so why not make it comply with the rules and go and have some fun. Who knows if one Clan appeared perhaps others would follow. :D

Re: Dream Spaceframe build

All about the regulations......Read them, understand them if you can and come up with a design that gives you some fun. I would go for as little steel as possible in the spaceframe, alloy extruded sections for side and front protection and as much carbon as you can afford. Got to be a bike engine......

Can you call it a Clan after all the modifications you have made?

Is it not about time you joined the growing number of Scottish car makers? :D

I take my hat off to you Scott for the effort you have put in. Great thread.

Re: Stage Rallying 2015 - Gravel or Tarmac interest

If that car is worth that amount of money what would the Minisport Mini that was at the show be worth?

Crazy money for a car that, after a few forest events, will be fit only for the recycling bin such are the state of the roads in the forests.

Re: Stage Rallying 2015 - Gravel or Tarmac interest

Rod, yes most things do get resolved but it is the hassle that that entails. Tyres was about one make then open rather that non availability due to size. Class structure does not make sense when an early Imp can run in the up to 1000cc class yet later Imp runs in the up to 1300cc class. As for 5 eve...

Re: Stage Rallying 2015 - Gravel or Tarmac interest

It is not just the costs that drive people away. Everything to do with historic rallying brings hassle. If it is not the running order, the class structure, the regulations, the tyres, the events or the licencing requirements there is always something to cause you grief. I had hoped that things woul...

I was thinking about joining in next year and came down from Glasgow for a recce as I have a couple of cars ( Imp and Clan) that are suitable for some of the HSCC classes. One thing I did notice was that there is plenty of panel damage on the saloon cars whereas the sports classes have very little. ...

Your line at the hairpin is a belter. Not seen that before. Just as well it is not an MSA event or you would be sent home for exceeding track limits. Just back from Oulton and they have sensors on the white lines. If you go over them it triggers a camera that takes your picture and it is then a visi...

I try and make as much as possible for my cars to keep costs down. This has made me a reasonable fabricator but having recently had a go at making a combined manifold I can understand why they are the price they are. The only way to do them cheaply is to spend vast sums on industrial tooling for the...

For a new build the blue book says 45mm x 2.5 for hoop, front legs , rear braces, diagonal and door bars. Strangely if you buy a cage from a certain manufacturer their certificated cage is only 38mm. Just imagine the difference in weight. Why the MSA let this happen I do not know but those that comp...

Thanks for your reply. A Clan would be Cat 2. Built for the woods but when I see some of the stages I think " it would be a pity to waste it". Sadly it is easier not to do events at the moment. I know that. You could knock up a chassis in a couple of days. Will even let you use the demon saw and tube bender to do it. Even have a nice Imp shell to take the measurements from. FOC of course. I have in my head an image of a rather tasty space frame imp that ran at Ingliston. It just looked lik...

Re: Fantasy Imp

The MX5 is also know for its weight. You are starting off with a heavy little car, unless the rust has got a hold of it, and you are adding an Imp on top. Does not make sense to me. You will have to IVA it what ever you do so it would be easier to do a scratch build. It then becomes a case of making...

You can if you make it yourself. Outline what you need, design to make that happen then add the outline you require. I would suggest a lightweight space frame, front engine driving the rear wheels clad in a GRP Imp shell. No bodging an MX5, no over engineering trying to hold it all together and if i...

1972 Tour of Mull Rally

With the Tour of Mull this weekend I thought it worthwhile mentioning that it is 40 years since Alan Conley and Crawford Dunn won this event in a Clan Crusader. The roads of Mull are always demanding and in 1972 the rally was a much longer event than the one we know and love today. As a Clan owner i...
